Toyota spokesman, Stephen Coughlan, says the lack of an automatic is a result of overwhelming global demand for manuals in the Extra Cab models. "There is no plan at this time for an automatic but we will continue to monitor customer demand in Australia," he says.

I have not heard of those symptoms so get it to a Toyota dealer and have them run the right diagnostics, not just hit-and-miss stuff.

Toyota's super-conservative service intervals — like its tow ratings — are a pain but the company is not money grabbing. They have just about the cheapest capped-price servicing plan in the business and in many cases will give you six services for less money than you'll spend for three with another manufacturer. They also have a better reputation for reliability than the Europeans and the parts are cheaper.

There are cheaper alternatives, including from the internet. But if you go outside the Toyota network, make sure it's a genuine part because you cannot afford to compromise on safety.

I’ve done some digging and Toyota has always had 10,000km service intervals, which can be annoying despite value in the capped-price servicing. Company spokesman Mike Breen says if you have a “doctored” service book he would be keen to investigate for you.

If you need space, go for the Camry, if you want something more nimble and sporty the Hyundai will be better. Both get The Tick from me.

I would go for the Camry every time after a Maxima. It's $28,990 driveaway for a new car at the moment and is about the same size as the Nissan but much more refined and lighter on fuel.

The Toyota Camry will be ideal for you, but don't be tempted by one of the sportier models with low-profile tyres. It has a lot of Australian engineering in the suspension and seats, and is currently bargain priced.

The towing rating is the main thing you need to get right, and your need to tow a horse float with two horses means you need a heavy four-wheel drive, like a Landcruiser or Patrol. Either one will be up to the towing task, and could be driven by a novice, but would be chore to drive around town.
