Tyres
I bought a 2014 Mitsubishi Triton last August and it's now done 49,000km. I have just had new tyres fitted and a wheel alignment done, and the car is pulling to the left slightly and is light on the steering, and also oversteers into corners. I took it back to have it checked and it was pointed out that my rear springs were bending the wrong way, about 20mm in the centre unloaded, and it was suggested that this was the problem. Would this be the cause, or has the alignment not been done correctly?
I need to do a 1,000km trip in one day, several times a year. Much of it on course chip bitumen roads. My Ford Mondeo has been great but I find the road noise particularly tiring despite recently trying tyres such as Michelin Primacy 3STs. I am hoping to find a car that is quiet, has comfortable seats with good support and compliant suspension. What is your favourite long distance recommendation please?
I currently have Kumho Solus 215x50R17 91V low-profiles tyres on my 2011 model Holden Cruze. I wish to renew with a better tyre that’s makes less road noise. Can you recommend anything?
Can you please start a campaign to rid Australia of hard riding cars and low-profile tyres? Most of this is being driven by marketing. We feel the ride 100 per cent of the time but only want handling and steering response for 10 per cent of the time. I have just bought a 2010 BMW X5 with 20-inch wheels and 40-profile tyres and the ride is bone-jarring harsh. That's great for a track day but for a woman on an inner city suburban school run the ride is ridiculously hard.
My 2006 Ford Falcon driver’s manual says I should set my tyre pressure at 30psi. But all the “experts” say that I should set them at 35psi. What I would like to know is will this extra 5psi make any difference to my recorded speed as shown on the speedo?
My 2014 Nissan Pulsar turbo has only 28,000km on the speedo. At the last service at 20,000km, the dealership said I had a tyre with a non-fixable puncture. I took the car to my tyre guy who checked it and said there was nothing wrong with it. I don't want to go back to the dealer, so if I get the service done by a mechanic I trust, will my warranty be OK?
My 2009 Ford Falcon XR6 turbo is showing unusually high tyre wear on the left rear tyre only. The front tyres are still around 80 percent, the right rear is around 70 percent, but the left rear is bald. Is this unusual or is it just an IRS thing?
I have a Mazda CX-5 with 40,000km that I am looking to change for something with less road noise. I am so over turning the radio up when driving, then lowering the volume when stopped. The new Hyundai Tucson was looking good until I read your review in The Tick where you said the Highlander misses some of the quietness and general refinement of the Mazda. Could you recommend the best from the Tucson, upgraded CX-5 or the new Kia Sportage for the least road noise and the best to drive.
