Why is my 2001 Toyota HiAce hard to start on cold mornings?
By Graham Smith · 18 May 2018

My 2001 Toyota Touring HiAce (Regius) with the 2.7-litre petrol engine is very difficult to start on cold wet mornings. I really have to work the accelerator; she tries to fire up, but just splutters. If I do get her to run, I have to sit and warm the engine for 3 or 4 minutes, because she has no pulling power! Once started, she starts well for the rest of the day. I have changed the plugs, cleaned the carburettor, and airflow sensor. A garage has suggested the fuel pump is not providing enough pressure. Could this be the problem, or is there anything else for me to try?

How long will a replacement gearbox last in a 2013 Mitsubishi Mirage?
By Graham Smith · 18 May 2018

After the last service of my daughter's 2013 Mitsubishi Mirage manual, she expressed concern about a rattle she'd noticed in the gearbox. I couldn't detect it but Mitsubishi replaced the gearbox while the local dealer explained that it was a known manufacturing problem. I understand a different manufacturer supplied the gearbox. Do you know if these replacement gearboxes will last the distance? Should the new one have more than 12 months warranty? Should it have five years, as was the case when the car was new?

Holden Colorado 2014: What does 'Service ESP' mean?
By Graham Smith · 18 May 2018

I bought a 2014 Holden Colorado in December 2017. It had done 53,000 km and was going okay, but I have not been able to drive it for about six weeks. When I turned it on the dashboard computer came up with 'Service ESP'. Service is not due yet, so what does this mean?

My car had its electric wiring redone and now it doesn't work.
By Graham Smith · 12 May 2018

I had to redo all my electric wiring on my 2007 Proton Gen 2. Now my dashboard doesn't work. Apparently, there is another fuse box that has burned out. I've tried to find out where it is situated in the car and what it looks like to buy one. Also, my gearbox is starting to give problems. It makes grinding noises when the car is stationary and it struggles sometimes to go into gear. Do you have any advice for me?

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe diff failure
By Graham Smith · 11 May 2018

I brought a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe for my wife.

Great car, we had all the services carried out by Hyundai then my daughter purchased the vehicle as she wanted a reliable vehicle with a traceable history. Again, the car has been rock solid and she has maintained the servicing. Well the front diff has just given way, the 5-year warranty period expired at the end of March and Hyundai are saying they can't honour the warranty because it has just expired. The repair cost is massive.

Does this model have a history diff problems? And whilst warranty has just lapsed and now this has happened, should Hyundai be supportive on this?

Driver's seat wearing out too quickly
By Graham Smith · 11 May 2018

I have a 2012 Ford Territory Titanium which I have owned since new, and always had serviced by a Ford dealer.

The leather on the side of both front seats has split/torn from the movement of the cushion as people climb in and out of the car. When I contacted my local dealer regarding the issue I was referred to the Ford Customer Relations Centre. CRC have today come back to me and stated that this issue is considered to be normal wear and tear for a vehicle of this age. I have never on any other vehicle faced this issue and feel it is very poor that a manufacturer considers it normal wear and tear when fabric on a seat fails in less than 6 years.

In your opinion am I being unreasonable?

My son’s 2011 Ford Focus Trend diesel auto doesn't start straight away of a morning. He has to wait about 10 mins before it starts. Is it something to do with the transmission as a noise comes from the gear stick area?
