Slice and dice: Top five overtakes in motorsport

Slice and dice. Tag and bag. Shake and bake. This is overtaking at its best. (image credit: Formula 1)

These racers have shown how big their plums are by overtaking the competition in unconventional manners.

Motorsport always provides some heart in your mouth moments that fans revel in, especially when one racer is coming in hot and eyeing down the guy in front.

Generally speaking, most overtaking manoeuvres are pretty straight forward. Max it out, come up the side, boom-pow, and give the loser a 'thank you wave' as you smugly shatter his ego. Simple.

Standard operating procedure. Standard operating procedure.

But we're not doing that here. This list celebrates the wildest passes that the racing world has seen.

5. Improved Production, Bathurst 2017, Jordan Cox vs Scott Wilson

Jordan Cox and his little Honda Civic have made a name for themselves in the improved production race series by nipping at the heels of the bigger cars.

At this year's 12 hour Bathurst support race, Cox chased down Scott Wilson's VP Commodore over the top of the mountain before making a bold overtaking move on Skyline of all places.

Brings back memories of when the big V8s were challenged by the smaller, and lighter cars at Bathurst.

4. V8 Supercars, Adelaide 2014, Scott Mclaughlin vs Jamie Whincup

The 2014 V8 Supercar championship started off with a bang at the Adelaide 500 on the last lap of Sunday's race.

Scott Mclaughlin was facing immense pressure from Jamie Whincup, trying to score Volvo a podium finish on debut.

The then series champ passed the young Kiwi on the second last corner, almost pushing him into the fence but ran wide on the final corner allowing Mclaughlin to reclaim second spot.

This prompted him to give the memorable 'jandal' speech afterwards.

3. F1, Spa 2011, Mark Webber vs. Fernando Alonso

Possibly one of the bravest overtakes you’ll ever see in F1, and it was all performed by our own Mark Webber.

This courageous act was performed at the Eau Rouge corner of Spa-Francorchamps track. A fast, incredibly demanding corner that bombards drivers with high-Gs and blurry vision. Not the best place for 320km/h+ overtakes.

To make the move more impressive, Webber flew around the outside of Ferando Alonso with incredible ease.

2.  DTM, Nuburgring 2013, Robert Wikens vs Mike Rockenfeller vs Augusto Farfus

A wet race track usually makes overtaking a competitor much harder but not for DTM racer, Robert Wickens.

Running behind Mike Rockenfeller and Augusto Farfus, Wickens took to the outside of the second corner to slingshot past both drivers, taking the lead with style.

1. F1, Donington 1993, Ayrton Senna

The late, Ayrton Senna is regarded as one of the best racers the F1 world has ever seen and his first lap performance at Donington in '93 is certainly proof of this.

Staring from fourth on the grid, Senna dropped to fifth after the race started but by the third corner he was already on the tail of Damon Hill who held second position.

Before the end of the first lap, Senna was in the lead of the race and in wet conditions it makes this feat even more remarkable.

Honourable mentions: F1, French Grand Prix 1979, Gilles Villeneuve vs Rene Arnoux

The fight for second was on between these two, changing positions again and again. Villeneuve ultimately took second position from Arnoux but not by much.
