What's a people's car without people? Joel investigates the Volkswagen Club of Victoria's coffee meet.
The sun was out and it was a warm Winter morning when members of the Victorian Volkswagen Club met to drink coffee and talk all things VW in Port Melbourne.
A variety of early model VWs were present, with a strong showing from Kombi owners, with no less than 8 different models in different configurations turning up. There were some very interesting Kombi related stickers on some of the vans...
One of the most unique vehicles on display was an ex German Military vehicle, called the Volkswagen Iltis, built by Volkswagen in the late 70’s. Just over 9,500 were built, with the majority being used by the military. A version of this car won the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1980.
Sitting side by side in part section was a first-generation Golf GTI and a Mk5 GTI, interesting to note just how far in size and performance this model has come.
Another highlight was a stunning Karmann Ghia, which was parked between two Kombis, which made for an interesting site.
No Volks meet would be complete without a couple of the brand’s most famous model, the Beetle. Two owners brought theirs along.
A final car worth mentioning was the lone, Meyers Manx buggy, which was originally built on a VW platform, it was even in the original era-correct bright purple colour.
