In a tin shed in the backyard of his home in suburban Melbourne, car enthusiast Craig Jones carefully sands back the roof of his latest classic Australian car, a Valiant AP6 sedan.

This Valiant has been completely hand built from bumper to bumper, and the attention to detail is incredible. Oh, we forgot to mention that the car is actually made entirely of Cypress pine!

When Craig was much younger, it wasn’t unusual to find him tinkering in the garage workshop, modifying his toys, and building things from scratch.

But it was when craftsmanship skills joined with his passion for Valiant cars that Craig started producing scale models out of his favourite material – natural, warm, organic, renewable wood.

Starting with a large block of timber, Craig is able to carve the shape of the vehicle with a mixture of hand tools and machining.

Once the basic shape is achieved, the car is refined and detailed until each characteristic of the car is completed. After many hours work, sanding and carving the end result is an extraordinary smooth and realistic scale model.

“My passion is locally produced Chryslers and Valiants from the ‘60s and ‘70s, though the demand for made-to-order Fords, Holdens, and even European cars has presented me with the challenge of crafting a large variety of models.” says Craig.

Every single car that is built is unique, with the different grains and textures of the timber ensuring the individuality of the model.

From a very young age, Aaron was drawn to cars. Spotting chrome bumpered classics from the back seat of a 1978 Toyota Corolla as a child, his knowledge grew from basic brands and models to more details and specifications as a teen. He began buying and collecting magazines, reading them cover to cover absorbing as much information as possible. Primarily following local motor racing – and the cars they were built from, Aaron would watch the Bathurst 1000 coverage each year from start to finish. With a broad passion for all classic cars, his specialty is locally built and assembled muscle cars, whilst keeping an eye on the oddballs. Hunting for old cars and the stories surrounding them is a lifelong obsession, often finding them in the most unusual places or via the most unusual people. Fast talking and quick thinking, he’s always on the go. If you want to chat - you're going to have to try and keep up with him!
