It's amazing how much a difference 10 years can make in the world of engine technology.

Mechanical advancements to forced induction, and smaller capacity enigines along with fast-shifting transmissions, four cylinders can now give V8s a run for their money.

The S3 is powered by a 2.0-litre, turbo four cylinder with 213kW/380Nm, while the RS4 has a 4.2-litre V8 producing 309kW/430Nm.

Both cars have all-wheel drive, but the S3 has a lower kerb weight (1545kg vs 1710kg), a dual-clutch automatic, and launch control.

Despite being neck and neck in the rolling race, the S3 walked away from the RS4 in the quarter mile (400m), completing it in 13.5 sec compared to 14.0 sec.

But this isn’t the first-time a turbocharged car has spanked another car with a larger engine on the drag strip, with Volkswagen Golf Rs being able to chop many of our local heroes.

A lot can change in 10 years, but even more over 50 years. In '71, a Ford XY Falcon GT-HO Phase III could accelerate from 0-100kph in 6.4 sec and now a Ford Focus RS can do the same in just 4.7 sec.

So, yes old-timers, there is a replacement for displacement.

Do you prefer big displacement engines or small turbocharged units? Let us know in the comments.

Following a passion shared by his father and grandfather, Mitchell’s love of cars really kicked off with his Godfather’s purchase of a new Mazda RX-8. Exposure to that car changed his world forever, leading to an RX-7 obsession. To feed his automotive addiction, Mitchell decided to become a motoring journalist and made his mark at several high-profile motoring publications before landing at CarsGuide. While he is a rotary loyalist, Mitchell also has a massive love for Aussie muscle cars, and dreams of one day getting behind the wheel of a Charger R/T E49 (if anyone will let him). His other passions include Queensland, and spending Saturdays with the boys.
