What's the difference?

The EQV is indeed a curious offering. The driving range is decent, but not outstanding, and depending on what you’re using it for, it could be a savvy investment. Especially if you charge using solar power. You’ll also save on servicing costs. But if you’re a limo operator, it really will depend how many kilometres you’re going to do each day. A V-Class might suffice.

Either way it’s great that Benz is giving buyers electric options in a variety of body styles and segments - an SUV simply won’t suit everyone.

If you can live with that ride quality and have the deep pockets for an EQV, there’s more than enough to like. But I suspect there won’t be many of you.

So, what did my family think about the Citroen C5 Aircross Sport?

I love how it looks and its updated safety list. It’s fairly spacious inside and has a great boot space but it’s lacking a lot of family-orientated practicality in the back seat. The lack of individual storage and amenities is noticeable when you have a kid or two but even as an adult, not having a cupholder for your coffee/drink on a trip feels odd.

The multimedia system and reversing camera need to be improved, too. Overall, it will suit a small family which is out of the baby stage but can’t yet justify upgrading to a larger SUV. It gets a 6.5/10 from my family. 

If you’ve seen a Mercedes van or people mover, you’ll have an idea of the EQV.

The difference between it and its V-Class twin is the ‘EQ’ touches, including the front end that has a definite connection to other EQ models like the EQA.

The chrome-rimmed grille is blacked out and has fins, and that’s the key difference between the two MPVs. Otherwise it’s a very large white box on wheels. Nicely designed 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, at that. 

Inside, the EQV is showing the age of this vehicle's shared underpinnings. Next year will mark 10 years since the current Vito went on sale in Europe, and while it and its derivatives are still somewhat handsome, the interior is getting on.

It’s hard to fault the materials used inside, and elements like the perforated leather steering wheel, and dash stitching are welcome, but it could feel even more premium. It’s no more high-end than a Kia Carnival Platinum that is more than half the price of the EQV.

But the look of the dash is very reminiscent of Benz models from a few years back - certainly nothing like the twin-screen set-up of the current crop. And given the size of the cabin, the 10.25-inch central screen looks small in this vehicle. 

The facelifted model sees a sportier front with the grille redesigned to highlight the double chevron badge.

The bonnet curves around the badge, as do the two long LED strip lights that connect the headlights. The bonnet also sports new divots that give it a gruffer edge.

The wide profile at the rear and new three-pronged tail-lights create some interest.

The black plastic moulding that runs along the base of the car could look unfashionable on a lighter colour but on our blue paintwork, it looks good. As does the contrasting black roof!

The interior trims are finished in a combination of synthetic and Nappa leather but boast a two-tone colour which might not land with everyone. Particularly given the navy portions seem to be glittery in certain lights.

Sitting at 1859mm wide, 1695mm high and just 4500mm long, the overall exterior design is sporty but cute. It should appeal to those who want a nice-but-not-loud-looking car and something that is easy to park.

If space is what you want, space is what you’ll find in the EQV. People movers like the Kia Carnival are incredibly spacious, but they can’t compete with something that’s spawned from a commercial vehicle platform, like this Benz.

Thanks to the flat floor and 2+2+3 three-row seating layout, you can literally stand up (depending on your height) and walk from the driver’s seat to the third row.

Back up front, the old underpinnings mean no fully digital instrument cluster here, just analogue dials, which is not a bad thing.

That also means the air con controls are separate from the central screen and therefore easy to use.

The MBUX system isn’t as advanced as the version fitted to the latest Benz models, and as a result there are fewer functions and it’s less complicated to use. There’s a touchpad as well as the touchscreen but I only ever used the screen.

Another slightly old school element to the EQV is the fact that it requires a key to start. Which is unusual for an EV. Also, the ignition is on the left side of the steering wheel which is great news for left-handed people but it’s somewhat annoying if you’re right-handed.

Storage wise up front, there is a decent space with a cover under the centre stack, housing cupholders, two USB-C ports and a 12-volt charger, but no wireless charger. There’s ample space for very large bottles in the front doors and it has a medium-sized glove box.

The front leather seats with fold-down armrests on each side are well bolstered and are very comfortable, too. No complaints there.

Given this car is designed to ferry people around, you’d hope for a functional rear cabin and on that Benz has delivered - for the most part.

Unsurprisingly given the EQV’s massive dimensions, there is a huge amount of headroom, legroom, and hip and shoulder room in all rows.

Both sliding side doors are power operated and one (the passenger side) can be opened via the key fob. The very large tailgate is also power operated.

Those two second-row captains chairs are comfy and supportive. There are map pockets on the rear of the front and second-row seats. There are floor and roof-mounted air vents, but just roof vents in the third row.

There’s not a whole lot of storage options in the second row, while the third row has stand-up phone holders, but that’s about it. No USB ports back there.

If you’re folding the second row seats, they’re quite heavy and cumbersome. But tumbling them forward via the lever is much easier. That ensures ample space to get into the third row. 

The third row can be folded flat as well but you have to remove the very large and heavy parcel shelf from the cargo area. Like the seats the shelf structure is also on rails and it lifts out if required. That third row can also slide but not as far as the second row.

The shelf can double as a stand-up desk for a computer in the rear if required. It’s actually quite handy.

And it helps hide items in the boot. It comes with plastic folding shopping crates. 

Benz says the boot can swallow 1030 litres with all seats in place, but minus the parcel shelf. It also has a 17-inch spare steel wheel under the rear of the vehicle.

The interior is spacious for a medium SUV but the back seat knocks off some points for family practicality. So, let’s start in the back.

Despite there being plenty of headspace for my 168cm (5’6’’) height, the legroom is cosy behind my driving position.

Meaning a 0-4 rearward facing child seat will encroach on front passenger space. It’s probably best suited to a family which is out of the baby stages but it was cumbersome fitting my big harnessed-booster seat in there, too.

It has ISOFIX child seat mounts on the outboard rear seats and three top tethers but two seats will fit best. The floor is flat, which offers far more comfort for a middle seat passenger and I love how the seats can be individually shifted.

The amenities and storage in this row are sparse. You get directional air vents, reading lights, netted map pockets and shallow storage bins in the doors.

Siblings may squabble over the single USB-A port on a long road trip but more than that, there are no cupholders or drink bottle holders back there or even a centre armrest.

That said, the 182mm ground clearance made it an easy car for my six-year-old to get in and out of; plus, the stadium-like seating and wide windows meant he had an awesome view this week.

Now for the front. It has ample amenities, storage and tech. You get plenty of head- and legroom, plus with the panoramic sunroof the cabin manages to feel airy, too.

Individual storage is great with an extra deep middle console, glove box, two cupholders, bins in each door and two very handy utility trays situated near the toggle-type shifter.

Charging options are much better up front, too, and you can choose between a wireless charging pad, two USB-A ports and a 12-volt socket to charge your device.

It's super easy to connect to the wired Apple CarPlay and there’s wired Android Auto for those users.

The built-in satellite navigation is straightforward but that’s where the simplicity ends. I did not find the multimedia system or the digital instrument panel to be terribly intuitive to use and the touchscreen controls can be laggy.

I’m sure you could get used to it over time but I felt flustered.

For this size SUV, the boot space is great at 580L with all seats in use but you can bump it up to 1630L if you fold the back row.

The floor can be adjusted to make a level load space or dropped to give you greater depth for bulkier items and there is a temporary spare tyre underneath the floor.

There are luggage tie-down anchors, a cargo blind and I always like having a powered tailgate. 

There is only one model for the C5 Aircross Sport and it will set you back $54,990, before on-road costs.

That prices it as the most expensive compared to its rivals with the Mazda CX-5 GT SP ($51,810) coming in closest but the Nissan X-Trail ST-L ($46,790) and the Kia Sportage SX+ ($41,850) are even more affordable.

The only included paint colours are 'Polar White' and 'Nera Black'. Our model’s 'Eclipse Blue' will add on $690.

However, the C5’s price tag doesn’t feel too cheeky because of the feature-heavy specification, including heated front seats, electric driver’s seat with massage function, a panoramic sunroof and a mix of premium Nappa leather and synthetic leather interior trim.

You also get a powered tailgate, rear privacy glass tinting, full LED lights on the exterior, individually sliding seats on the back row and black 19-inch alloy wheels.

The technology has been upgraded with the dashboard being headlined by a 10-inch touchscreen multimedia system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel.

Built-in satellite navigation, as well as wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also included as standard equipment.

On top of that, the safety list has been significantly improved, but more on that later. 

The EQV is a battery electric vehicle that uses a single motor that sends up to 150kW of power and 365Nm of torque to the front wheels. It is paired with a 90kWh lithium-ion battery pack housed beneath the floor. The kerb weight is a hefty 2846kg.

With a DC charging capacity of up to 110kW, topping the battery up from 10 to 80 per cent can be done using a rapid charging station in about 45 minutes.

If you use an 11kW AC charger, like a Mercedes-Benz Wallbox, it will take approximately 10 hours to recharge from empty to 100 per cent.

The C5 Aircross Sport has a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with a maximum power output of 133kW and 250Nm of torque. It’s not super grunty but there’s plenty here to keep you up to speed on the open road.

It is a front-wheel drive and has an eight-speed auto transmission but the gear changes can feel a bit jerky at lower speeds.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the EQV has a driving range of 418km on the NEDC cycle, which is about 355km on the WLTP cycle, which is seen as more real world.

I covered 233km in the EQV and by the end of the week the vehicle’s trip computer was sayong I had used 239km of range, which is pretty close.

As an example of how this vehicle would be used, let’s say an airport transfer driver did six trips to and from the Melbourne CBD to the airport in a day (about 46km), that’s about 276km - which is well within the EQV’s range.

However, when you consider the diesel V-CLass has a range of more than 900km, you can see why some buyers might not want to take the risk.

It consumes 26.3kWh of energy, which was the same figure I achieved. 

The EQV has a CCS charging port.

Ah, this is where it earns back some points!

I was very impressed by the efficiency of this because the official combined cycle fuel figure is 5.7L/100km and my real-world usage came to 6.2L! That’s fantastic for this sized SUV and for a turbo.

With a fuel tank of 53L and based on the combined fuel figure, you should be able to get a driving range of around 930km, which is good for those families who like to do road trips.

Driving the EQV feels a bit like driving a bus. That’s because you’re essentially driving a bus.

There’s no getting around the EQV’s size and heft, especially in an urban driving setting. It’s massive and challenging to park, especially in inner city areas with small spaces. It also has a pretty sizable 12.9-metre turning circle.

It does also have excellent visibility thanks to a significant amount of glass around you.

After so many years of complaining about Mercedes’ steering wheel-mounted gear shifter, I think I have finally come around to it. Would I prefer it in the centre console? Yes, but I now think the stalk is actually a logical place for it.

A stalk is a less logical place to house cruise control buttons. They are much better on the steering wheel than a stalk hidden behind the wheel.

From take-off, the EQV doesn’t quite flaw you with its acceleration like some EVs can. It’s more leisurely, but far from slow.

The 0-100km/h dash is done in approximately 12 seconds but around town it is responsive enough. In fact, on a particularly hectic day rushing to and from appointments all over town, I was surprised how lively the EQV felt, despite feeling heavy on the road.

As expected, it’s quiet on the road, for the most part - a nice change from diesel engines found in its siblings. But I did notice some creaking noises when driving on less than perfect tarmac.

The steering is weighted on the heavier side and slow to respond but that’s fine for a vehicle like this. You don’t need point and shoot steering for a 3.0-tonne bus. The brakes are not super responsive and require a bit of weight in the foot.

The biggest issue is with the EQV’s ride. The firmly sprung suspension combined with the vehicle’s mass means that you feel, and hear, every single bump.

I understand it is a commercial vehicle platform but given its positioning, Benz could have done more to soften the ride and make it less crashy, especially over speed bumps, potholes and sections of roadwork.

The EQV bumps along the road after you’ve gone over a speed bump and takes a while to balance itself out. It’s this floaty, bouncy ride characteristic that makes all but the smoothest roads a bit of a chore.

Despite its city-friendly size, the C5 Aircross Sport is just as happy cruising on the open-road as it is in an urban environment.

The ride is smooth enough once you get up to a steady speed but the suspension can feel harsh on a bumpy road.

Also, the auto stop-start function can make it feel sluggish to respond, so I disabled this on most trips.

There is plenty of power so you'll feel confident overtaking or getting up to speed on the open road. However, you have to be a little more aggressive with the accelerator when you’re hitting hills.

The steering can, at times, feel vague when you’re at lower speeds but is otherwise responsive.

The cabin space is quiet and nice to be in on the highway and you’ll be able to chat with your passengers with ease.

What I like most about this though is the visibility – the windows are large and I feel like I have a clear view most of the time, which isn’t always the case in an SUV.

Parking this is a cinch with entry to tight car parks helped by a 10.7m turning circle!

However, the 180-degree view camera isn’t great and near hopeless at night time. A clearer image would be welcome but front and rear parking sensors ease the annoyance.

The updated safety list is most welcomed, especially on a family SUV.

The C5 Aircross Sport has the following as standard - daytime running lights, forward collision alert, lane keeping aid, lane departure alert, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, intelligent seat belt reminders, traffic sign recognition, 180-degree view reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors and adaptive cruise control with stop and go function.

Special mention for the new fatigue detection alert. When it triggers it doesn’t stop sounding until both of the driver's hands are detected on the steering wheel.

The autonomous emergency braking with car, pedestrian and cyclist detection is operational from 10 – 80km/h (5.0 -140km/h for car detection), however the pedestrian and cyclist functions are only detectable in the day time. It’s usual to see it operational at night, as well.

Despite the new safety items, it still only has six airbags, which includes curtain airbags covering both rows but that’s pretty low for a family car nowadays.  

It was awarded four from a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating back in 2019 but didn’t have all of the new items at the time of testing.  

The EQV is covered by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty for private buyers (that drops to five years/250,000km for commercial buyers), and an eight-year or 160,000km battery warranty. 

The servicing schedule is once a year or every 40,000km.

Benz offers the EQV with a choice of three servicing plans, covering three services ($1252), four ($1959), or five services ($2149).

It also comes with a one-year complimentary Chargefox subscription.

The warranty terms are a little better than the LDV Mifa 9 (five years/160,000km), but you get more kilometres (200,000km) for the battery warranty on the LDV.

The on-going costs are super-reasonable on the C5 Aircross Sport, with a five-year/unlimited km warranty included.

You can also choose to pre-purchase a three- or five-year capped-priced servicing plan, both significantly cheaper than the pay-as-you-go option. 

On the three-year plan, services are $1100 or an annual average of $366.

It’s a flat $2000 for the five-year plan, (averaging just $400 per service), which is very competitive for the class.

Servicing intervals are every 12 months or 15,000km, whichever occurs first.

The Aircross also comes with a five-year roadside assistance plan that is offered through Digicall Assist, for added peace-of-mind.
