Thanks for the feedback. All systems are different and a Golf kills the engine every time you come to a full halt.
If you like the Forester, which gets The Tick from me, there is no reason not to go again. If you want something to compare so you're sure, test drive the Mazda CX-5.
Your choices both get The Tick, but the Benz A250 might be too sporty for a retirement car and the A3 is an upscale Volkswagen Golf. A good mate has just bought an Accord Euro and, even though it goes out of production soon, he loves it. You should test-drive all three.
That's a tough one. The Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50 are rated to tow 3500kg, but if you tow the full 3500kg, as you want to do, the payload you can also carry is severely reduced. None of the other utes marketed here by the major manufacturers are rated to tow 3500kg, which rules them out. If you want to tow 3500kg and carry a decent load, you're really looking at one of the big brutes from America, like a Ford F-Series, a Dodge Ram, or a Toyota Tundra.
Thanks for the tip. We'll add that to our list of things to look out for on the Ranger. Presumably it's the same with the Mazda BT-50.
A compact SUV will probably be better for her but I'd put the Mazda CX-5 - which gets The Tick - well ahead of the Qashqai.
The CX-5 is the better vehicle, but the Hyundai is likely to be cheaper and with much longer to run on the factory warranty.
We don't have space for dyno graphs but try to mention the power delivery in stories. The new breed of smaller-capacity turbo engines — among them Hyundai's 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine — will give you the bottom-end grunt you seek.
