Mazda's CX-5 has long been the mid-size SUV darling, but fresh metal from rival Toyota has put it to the test. Unlike the Toyota RAV4 though, the Mazda CX-5 doesn't have a petrol-electric hybrid gimmick to stand out from the crowd, instead relying on bountiful equipment levels, competent handling and head-turning aesthetics. The base Mazda CX-5 is available with two petrol engines, a 115kW/200Nm 2.0-litre or 140kW/252Nm 2.5-litre unit.

Mazda’s top-spec CX-5 Akera is available with a choice of three engines, kicking off at $48,330 for the 140kW/252Nm 2.5-litre petrol.

The second-to-top CX-5 grade, the GT, starts off from $46,090, before on-road costs, for the 140kW/252Nm 2.5-litre petrol.

Two engines are available in the CX-5 Touring grade, a 140kW/252Nm 2.5-litre petrol or a 140kW/450Nm 2.2-litre turbo-diesel.

Maxx Sport variants of the CX-5 are offered with two petrol engine choices – a 115kW/200Nm 2.0 litre and 140kW/252Nm 2.5 litre – as well as a 2.2-litre twin-turbo-diesel outputting 140kW/450Nm.
