There are plenty of reports of the BT50 gearbox jumping out of fifth gear, but we haven’t seen one of it jumping out of first. It could be wear, although it’s very low kays for wear to be showing up. Take it to a gearbox specialist and have it checked.
It is a relatively common complaint with the BT-50 when towing and we get quite a lot of complaints from Navara owners as well. The answer seems to be that the clutches fitted at the factory are marginal for heavy-duty use, and the answer from mechanics we've spoken to is to fit heavy-duty aftermarket clutches.
Jumping out of fifth gear is a common problem on early BT50s, but a fix was supposed to have been introduced in late 2007. I agree that Mazda should bear at least some of the cost of the repairs so take it to a Mazda dealer and submit a claim.
Mazda spokeswoman Karla Leach has good news: "After reviewing the customer's case, we have refunded the cost of the driveshaft."
The clutch might be smelly, but is it slipping or doing anything else untoward. Clutches are a regularly reported problem on one-tonne utes, which suggests most are borderline in capacity. If there is a problem with the functioning of the clutch, approach Mazda again about replacing it. If there isn't a problem think about replacing the clutch with a heavy-duty one that's more capable of handling your towing needs.
No, it only applies to the manual gearbox, which is a completely different 'box to the one in your car.
