Sitting above the S model, and below the top-spec HSE, the Range Rover Velar SE is powered by a lineup of six different engines; three turbo-diesels, ranging from the four-cylinder D180 (132kW/430Nm) to the 3.0-litre D300 V6 (221kW/700Nm), as well as a trio of petrol units, from the single-turbo P250 (184kW/365Nm) to the supercharged 3.0-litre P380 V6.

All are mated to an eight-speed, torque-converter automatic with drive going to all wheels through a single-speed transfer box managed by Land Rover’s ‘Intelligent Driveline Dynamics’ (IDD) system, allowing a seamless switch between on- and off-road modes.

The level of standard equipment across the range is high, including a gesture-controlled power tailgate, 18-inch alloy rims, LED head and tail-lights, reversing camera, rear parking sensors, heated door mirrors, electronically controlled eight-way adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control air, eight-speaker audio, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlights, keyless entry and start, voice controls, a tailgate spoiler, the dual-screen 'Touch Pro Duo' multimedia system and flush handles that emerge from each door.

Opt for the SE grade, and the wheels grow to 20-inches, the number of speakers rises to 17, the number of ways you can adjust the (now heated) front seats hits 20, you’ll have parking aids front and rear, plus the brilliant digital instrument display. The R-Dynamic bodystyle (branded treadplates, leather steering wheel with chrome bezel, unique bumpers front and rear, front fog lights, plus a range of special materials and finishes) adds $6000 to the list price.

Claimed fuel economy for the combined (ADR 81/02 - urban, extra-urban) cycle ranges from a low of 5.4L/100km for the D180 four-cylinder diesel, to 9.4L/100km for the P380 petrol V6.

As a small boy James often sat on a lounge with three shoes in front of him, a ruler between the cushions, and a circular drinks tray in his hands. He would then play ‘drivings’, happily heading to destinations unknown for hours on end. He’s since owned many cars, raced a few, and driven (literally) thousands of them at all points of the globe. He’s steered around and across Australia multiple times, spent time as an advanced driving instructor, and had the opportunity to experience rare and valuable classics here and overseas. His time in motoring journalism has included stints at national and international titles including Motor, Wheels and TopGear, and when asked to nominate a career highlight, James says interviewing industry legend Gordon Murray, in the paddock at the 1989 Australian Formula One Grand Prix was amazing, especially as Murray waived away a hovering Ayrton Senna to complete the conversation. As Deputy Editor, James manages everything from sub-editing to back-end content while creating written and video product reviews.
