The Trofeo is the slightly more track-honed version of the Maserati GranTurismo, costing from $450,000, before on-road costs, compared to $75,000-cheaper base Modena.
Main rivals include the BMW M8 Competition, as well as higher-end versions of the Porsche 911, Mercedes-AMG GT and Bentley Continental GT.
Under the bonnet sees a tuned version of the Modena’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, making 410kW of power at 6500rpm and 650Nm of torque at 3000rpm. Representing a jump of 45kW and 50Nm respectively, they cut the 0-100 time to just 3.5 seconds, while top speed bumps up 18km/h to 320km/h.
As usual, drive is sent to all four wheels through a ZF eight-speed torque-converter automatic, while the Trofeo junks the mechanical self-locking differential for an electronic one that works on all four wheels.
Note, too, that at just 1795kg, the latter possesses a terrific power-to-weight ratio of 228kW per tonne, against the Modena’s more-modest but still highly-impressive 203kW/tonne. Remember, the engine – known as the Nettuno, is a modified version of the powertrain found in Maserati’s mid-engined MC20 supercar.
The GranTurismo’s platform is a variation of the Giorgio architecture that debuted in the Alfa Romeo Giulia back in 2016.
Being a 2+2-seater grand touring luxury coupe with an athletic edge, the Trofeo boasts carbon-fibre body kit additions as well as glossier trim accents, upgraded cabin material and more-vivid contrasts in the interior’s overall visual presentation. Â
These build on top of the Modena’s leather upholstery, electric front seats, heated seats, a head-up display, a 360-degree view camera, high-end audio with 14 speakers, a digital rear-view mirror, a massive twin-central touchscreen, Android-based multimedia, Alexa voice-control assistance, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a digitised analogue clock with performance telemetry, air suspension and adaptive dampers.
On the safety front, the Trofeo includes front/rear AEB with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, lane change alert/assist, rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control.
Finally, the GranTurismo Trofeo comes with a 310-litre boot complete with a ski-port.
