The Maserati GranTurismo is a grand touring coupe that costs as much as, and slots neatly between, models as disparate as the Porsche 911 and Bentley Continental GT.

Known as a 2+2-seater because the rear seats have limited space, the Italian luxury express is the second-generation version, after the well-received 2007 original.

Built on a modified version of the Alfa Romeo Giulia’s Giorgio architecture, it features a variation of Maserati’s acclaimed mid-engined MC20 supercar’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine.

In the ‘base’ Modena, it delivers 365kW of power and 600Nm of torque, driving all four wheels via a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. With the aid of exceptional lightness and aerodynamics, this near-five-metre-long sports car can hit 100km/h from standstill in 3.9 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 302km/h.

There is a host of advanced driver assist safety tech as standard, including AEB for the front and rear, lane change alert/assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise, while air suspension and adaptive dampers are also fitted.

Of course, being a grand touring coupe that kicks off from $375,000, before on-road costs, the Modena arrives with lots of luxuries, such as sumptuous leather trim, heated seats, electric front seats, a 360-degree view camera, a head-up display, a digital rear-view mirror, high-end audio with 14 speakers, Android-based multimedia that Alexa assistance, voice-control and a Wi-Fi hotspot. You’ll also find a digitised analogue clock with performance telemetry.

Finally, with a 310 litres boot and a ski-port into the cabin, the GranTurismo Modena offers some semblance of everyday practicality.

Byron started his motoring journalism career when he joined John Mellor in 1997 before becoming a freelance motoring writer two years later. He wrote for several motoring publications and was ABC Youth radio Triple J's "all things automotive" correspondent from 2001 to 2003. He rejoined John Mellor in early 2003 and has been with GoAutoMedia as a senior product and industry journalist ever since. With an eye for detail and a vast knowledge base of both new and used cars Byron lives and breathes motoring. His encyclopedic knowledge of cars was acquired from childhood by reading just about every issue of every car magazine ever to hit a newsstand in Australia. The child Byron was the consummate car spotter, devoured and collected anything written about cars that he could lay his hands on and by nine had driven more imaginary miles at the wheel of the family Ford Falcon in the driveway at home than many people drive in a lifetime. The teenage Byron filled in the agonising years leading up to getting his driver's license by reading the words of the leading motoring editors of the country and learning what they look for in a car and how to write it. In short, Byron loves cars and knows pretty much all there is to know about every vehicle released during his lifetime as well as most of the ones that were around before then.
