The Hyundai Nexo made headlines in 2018 as the world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell SUV available for mass production, reinforcing Hyundai’s commitment to zero-emissions mobility. Designed to succeed the Tucson Fuel Cell (also known as the ix35 Fuel Cell in some markets), the Nexo arrived as a standalone model with futuristic styling and advanced technology to match its cutting-edge powertrain.
Built on a dedicated platform, the Nexo offers a driving range of up to 666km (WLTP), with its hydrogen tanks able to be refuelled in around five minutes. While early uptake has been limited globally due to refuelling infrastructure, Hyundai positioned the Nexo as a technological showcase, featuring autonomous driving aids, remote parking, and a high-efficiency fuel-cell stack.
In Australia, the Nexo was introduced in 2021 primarily for government and fleet trials, with public availability tied closely to the development of hydrogen refuelling stations. Despite niche appeal, it remains a pivotal part of Hyundai’s clean-energy future.
