Holden issues eleventh recall
By Joshua Dowling · 05 Aug 2014
Holden issues 11th recall so far this year, more than any other brand.Holden has issued its eleventh safety recall notice this year -- more than any other brand or any other time in Holden's history.Toyota has the second-highest number of recalls with six bulletins issued so far this year, while among the other Top Five brands Mazda and Hyundai have issued two each and Ford has issued one.The latest Holden bulletin is an expansion of a recall issued in January for the Barina Spark, at $13,990 drive-away the cheapest car in its range. In January, Holden recalled 102 Barina Sparks because the transmission mount "may develop a fracture" which could cause the manual gearbox to be unsupported and "lead to a loss of control of the vehicle".The latest recall has added 385 Holden Barina Sparks to the number of cars affected, bringing the total to 487 vehicles.Holden said it is a precautionary measure and there have been no reports of failures in Australia, "however we will always err on the side of caution … to ensure customer satisfaction and safety".It is the second recall for a separate issue for the Holden Barina Spark; last month it was recalled because the steering knuckle bolts may not have been tightened correctly and the steering could fail.Meanwhile, the Holden Commodore has been recalled five times in three months, the Holden Cruze has been recalled twice (one of which was the third recall for the same fault initially reported last year), and the regular Holden Barina model has been recalled once. The recalls.gov.au website has issued 11 Holden safety bulletins this year but, in a move likely to confuse consumers, it has removed the first one issued for the Barina Spark in January and replaced it with the latest one issued in August for the same fault. The Commodore and Cruze are made at Holden's factory in Elizabeth on the outskirts of Adelaide, but the Barina models are made in South Korea, where Holden is likely to source more cars from once it closes its Australian factories in 2017.Holden already sources most of the vehicles in its line-up from South Korea or Thailand but the company says in the future it will source vehicles from several divisions across the General Motors world. The next Commodore is likely to be sourced from Opel in Germany, say insiders, and Holden executives have already driven early prototype versions of the 2018 model. It means the Commodore will have come full circle; the first Commodore introduced in 1978 was an Australian-ised version of the large Opel sedan at the time. However, Holden is yet to confirm the new front-wheel-drive car will be called a Commodore. When asked why Holden had issued so many recalls, spokeswoman Kate Lonsdale said: "This is consistent with the approach being taken across (General Motors)."In North America, General Motors has come under fire for being slow to respond to a recall of defective ignition switches that have so far been linked to at least 19 deaths -- even though the company knew about the fault for 10 years. It has prompted US Senators to propose "life in prison" for car executives who try to hide recalls, and has led to a class action lawsuit against General Motors by at least 650 owners of the affected cars.Meanwhile, the Holden Commodore has narrowly avoided what could become Australia's biggest ever recall. The Chevrolet Camaro -- which shares its underbody and core components with the Holden Commodore -- has also been recalled because of a faulty ignition switch but Holden says the Commodore does not have the same defect even though it uses the exact same part.Holden Barina Spark recall

Holden recalls 11,500 Cruze over crash risk
By Karla Pincott · 20 Aug 2013
The recall is for a defect that means the Cruze’s supplementary electric vacuum pump could fail when the engine is cold, reducing the vacuum and undermining the brake system. The notice warns that this could pose a potential crash hazard.Holden says 11,480 of the JH Cruze vehicles with 1.4 litre turbo petrol engine and automatic transmission built between 22nd February 2011 and 8th June 2012 are affected."We've had one alleged report of a minor collision during a driveway reversing manoeuvre," Holden spokesperson Andrea Matthews says, adding there were no injuries. The 1.4-litre is just one of four engines in the Cruze line-up, which has sold around 45,000 cars over the time span covered by the recall.Holden is writing to owners whose cars are in the affected build numbers range from 6G1PD5E80BL518864 - 6G1PE6E8XCL661387, but advises that concerned buyers should contact their nearest Holden dealer.

Holden cruze fuel leak probe
By Mark Hinchliffe · 11 Mar 2010
Corporate affairs spokesman Jonathan Rose said the potential problem was in the fuel feed hose.  A ‘Stop Delivery Notice’ was issued to dealers on March 3 to not sell, deliver or transfer the vehicles until the investigation has been carried out "and, if necessary, corrective action has been completed"."No action is required at this time on any (2010) petrol Cruzes that have already been delivered to customers," he said."However, safety is always our number one priority so if further action is required we will notify customers as soon as possible."

Holden recalls nearly 10,000 Cruzes
By Karla Pincott · 27 Jun 2012
Following a similar recall in the US, 9547 loally-built Cruzes have been recalled to fix a defect that could see oil dripping from the engine and catching fire if it contacts hot engine parts. The recall applies to all Cruze sedans and hatches with the 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engineThe recall statement cited a condition that “in some instances” could see the oil drip appear “if an oil change is not done properly. If oil makes contact with hot engine parts such as the exhaust manifold or catalytic converter, a fire could occur.”The recall overseas affected close to half a million vehicles built in the US, with 413,418 of those sold there, 61,299 in Canada and a 700 in Israel. The Holden recall also affects about 600 Cruzes in New Zealand. The Holden statement says there have been no reported cases of fires in Australia or New Zealand traced to the defect.“However we will always err on the side of caution when it comes to initiating safety recalls and campaigns.  Even if there have been no reported cases in our market we will take action to assure our customers and their vehicles are safe,” Holden director of warranty, customer satisfaction and quality Craig Porritt said in the statement.Holden is contacting potentially impacted customers directly, and will modify the defect at no charge.  Concerned customers should call their local Holden dealer or the Holden Recall centre on 1800 632 826.

2010 Holden Cruze transmission problem
Answered by Carsguide.com.au · 03 Jun 2016

You're a member of a large club. I would approach Holden with the view of having them replace the gearbox for free as they have done with many other Cruze owners. Because of the age of the car, they might not replace it for free; they're more likely to make you an offer to cover part of the cost of replacing the car.

Holden Cruze: Signs of trouble
Answered by Graham Smith · 17 Jun 2016

If it's just a smear I wouldn't be too concerned with it, I'd simply keep a close eye on it, but if it's more than a smear I'd have it checked out. Most people find out about the transmission problem when they lose drive. By then it's too late, the transmission has been damaged.

Holden Cruze transmission failure
Answered by Graham Smith · 27 May 2016

We have had numerous reports of transmission failures on the Cruze and you would suspect that yours has suffered a similar failure. You could try and recoup your money, but I would guess it's too late and you wouldn't be successful. If you do choose to do it talk to your Holden dealer and ask them to submit a claim to Holden.

Will Holden replace the transmission on my 2012 Cruze?

It is a common problem. Contact Holden’s customer service (1800 033 349) and lodge a claim to have the transmission replaced.

Holden Cruze 2010: Lemon
Answered by Graham Smith · 22 Sep 2017

That model Cruze was plagued with gearbox problems like yours. Holden was replacing the gearbox free of charge as a gesture of good will, and you might be able to convince them to do the same for you, but as yours is seven years old you might have trouble mounting a compelling case.

If Holden refuses your request you could take your case to the ACCC.

Holden Cruze 2010: Losing power
Answered by Graham Smith · 05 Jul 2019

Holden recalled 8000 diesel Cruzes in 2014 for a driveshaft problem that causes the vehicle to lose power. The cars affected were mostly built between February 2009 and December 2010. Holden replaced any driveshafts found to be faulty. Contact your dealer, or Holden direct.
