Tesla has released further details on its most affordable vehicle yet, with the Model 3 set to arrive Down Under in early 2019 with an expected starting price of around $44,000 before on-road costs.

Depending on currency conversion and local taxes, the Model 3 should sneak under $50,000 drive-away, with Tesla saying it will not be adding any extra costs to the price tag.

Pricing in the United States kicks off from $US35,000 for versions fitted with the standard battery, which provides 355 kilometres of driving range and a 0-97km/h (0-60mph) sprint time of 5.6 seconds.

Opting for the $US9000 ($A11,300) long-range battery increases range to 500km and reduces the dash from standstill to 97km/h by half a second.

Furthermore, the standard battery's top speed of 210km/h rises to 225km/h when the long-range option is added.

Tesla's Supercharger technology provides a standard Model 3 with 209km of range per 30 minutes charged, while a normal home electrical outlet (240 volts) will offer 48km of driving for every hour charged.

Stepping up to the long-range version sees the Supercharger provide 274km of range per 30 minutes charged, whereas a home outlet will offer 60km of driving for every hour charged.

The Model 3's simplified interior is highlighted by a 15-inch, landscape-orientated touchscreen multimedia system, which features all of the vehicle’s functions – including its dual-zone climate controls.

Furthermore, the conventional key fob has been ousted in favour of a smartphone app that allows keyless entry by connecting with the Model 3 over Bluetooth, while an RFID card is also handy for valet situations.

Other standard equipment includes satellite navigation, voice control, Wi-Fi/4G LTE connectivity, Internet radio, textile seating, reversing camera, auto-dimming rearview mirror, power side mirrors, two USB ports and a 12-volt power outlet.

Each Model 3 rolls on 18-inch 'Aero' alloy wheels as standard, but 19-inch 'Sport' rims are available for $US1500 ($A1880).

Safety and driver assistance technologies extend to full LED exterior lighting, surround-view cameras, auto emergency braking, forward collision warning, two second-row child seat tethers, eight airbags, anti-left alarm system and tyre pressure monitoring.

A 'Premium Upgrades' package costs $US5000 ($A6268) and adds premium heated seating, upgraded cabin materials (including open-pore wood and two rear USB ports), 12-way adjustable front seats with memory function, powered steering column, premium audio system, tinted glass roof, LED fog lights and auto-dimming, heated, power side mirrors.

An enhanced version of Tesla's 'Autopilot' technology resides on the options list for $US5000 ($A6268), adding the ability for the Model 3 to match speed to traffic conditions, keep within a lane, automatically change lanes, move from one freeway to another, exit a freeway and self-park.

Opting for full self-driving capability costs a further $US3000 ($A3761) and will allow the Model 3 to drive itself with no intervention from the passenger sitting in the driver’s seat.

However, Tesla says "this feature is dependent upon extensive software validation and regulatory approval, which may vary by jurisdiction."

Additional Autopilot features will roll out over time thanks to over-the-air software updates.

Measuring in at 4694mm long, 1849mm wide and 1443mm high with a 2875mm wheelbase, the five-seat Model 3 has a kerb weight of 1610kg in standard guise, or 1730kg in long-range form.

A double wishbone, virtual steer axis front suspension teams with an independent multi-link rear set-up to handle ride comfort.

Six paint colours are on offer, with 'Solid Black' incurring no extra cost, while 'Midnight Silver Metallic', 'Deep Blue Metallic', 'Silver Metallic', 'Pearl White Multi-Coat' and 'Red Multi-Coat' attract a $US1000 ($A1254) cost each.

Every Model 3 comes with a four-year/80,467km factory warranty, while batteries are covered for eight years/160,934km in standard form or eight years/193,121km in long-range guise.

Reservations for the Model 3 have been open since March 31 last year, with a $1500 deposit placing local customers in a queue until right-hand drive production begins in time for a 2019 launch. Over 500,000 pre-orders have been placed globally.

Long-range Model 3s began rolling out of Tesla's factory earlier this month, with US customer deliveries to commence in late October, while standard versions start production in November.

Tesla has already confirmed that a dual-motor, all-wheel drive Model 3 will start to be manufactured in the second quarter of next year, with a more potent performance version to follow.
