Second 5 finalists announced for COTY 2010

The final five contenders are revealed today and complete the 10-car lineup for the two days of back-to-back assessment and comparison that will decide the biggest prize in Australian motoring. Each is aiming to succeed the Volkswagen Golf as the COTY champion.

The new contenders range from the smallest to the largest in the 2010 field, the baby Hyundai i20 and the Kia Sportage SUV, as well as the only homegrown hero in the field, the Toyota Camry Hybrid. The Skoda Superb wagon and Subaru Forester diesel also survived the cull of more than 100 new models that hit our showrooms over the past year.

They are joined today by the contenders for the Green Car of the Year award and the People's Choice judging. The four green heroes in the 2010 contest are the Holden Barina Spark, Volkswagen Polo diesel, the Camry Hybrid and Holden's latest E85-compatible Commodore VEII.

The COTY finalists represent every major class and category in Australian showrooms, from baby fuel misers to sports cars and SUVs. Their final ranking in the top 10 will be decided by nine Carsguide judges from across Australia, who have more than 100 years of combined experience in driving and assessing new cars, as well as fuel economy champion and retired rally star Ed Ordynski.

The criteria for the COTY contest is simple: each car is measured against an overall standard of excellence in everything from safety and design to comfort, quality and economy, as well as its class rivals.
