The difference now is that the Mercedes has the more confronting styling, although it does not stop it making an easy entry to this year's Top 10 shootout.

The quality of the E Class package is reflected in the 250 CGi drivetrain in the starting price petrol model, which is much greater than the sum of numbers would suggest.

A full leather interior, bi-xenon headlights, 17in alloy wheels, satnav, Bluetooth phone link, power-adjustable seats, hard-drive and iPod-integrated sound system are among the key standard features.
