Chery has announced its latest entrant into the Australian market.

Sitting below the Omoda 5, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro is promising a national drive-away price below $24,000 when it launches in October, which could make it the cheapest SUV on sale bar the super mini Suzuki Ignis.

The 4318mm long small SUV with its 2610mm wheelbase will become a direct rival for the $23,990 drive-away MG ZS Excite, just as that car is approaching a facelift that will likely make it more expensive.

For some time now the ZS's cheap price has kept it the sales king of the segment ahead of established names such as the Mazda CX-3.

Chery has not formally announced pricing, the target of sub-$24K drive-away is likely for the lower-trim Urban grade, which will be joined by a higher spec Ultimate.

The Tiggo 4 Pro promises more up-to-date features that the MG, too, such as a turbo-petrol 1.5-litre four-cylinder developing 108kW and 210Nm — a fair chunk more than the ZS's wheezy 84kW non-turbo engine.

Inside, it has a 10.25-inch multimedia touchscreen and 10.25-inch digital driver's display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Heated seats are listed but will probably be reserved for the top grade.

It is certainly better kitted out on paper than a basic Mitsubishi ASX GS which starts at around $26,200 drive-away, depending on state and territory.

Outside there are LED headlights and a distinct, blocky appearance for the facelifted Tiggo 4 Pro that distinguish it from the Omoda 5's hatchback-like silhouette.

There's a danger the Tiggo 4 Pro may encroach on the Omoda 5 (from $27,990 drive-away) but Chery is likely to be happy with all additional sales.

For safety, Chery has listed the Tiggo 4 Pro as being fitted with airbags and a selection of driver assistance features.

There is no Euro NCAP or ANCAP safety test rating to look to, though the model scored five stars in China's C-NCAP testing in 2015.

Like all of its models, Chery will cover the Tiggo 4 Pro with a seven-year, unlimited kilometre warranty in Australia.

“We are delighted to introduce the Tiggo 4 Pro to the Australian market. This feature-packed compact SUV will complement the Chery range in Australia and is set to deliver an innovative and affordable motoring experience, ” said Chery Australia CEO Lewis Lu.

Chery has already launched the Tiggo 4 Pro in other key expansion markets, including Middle East and South Africa.

The brand is currently sitting a 5152 sales this year, up 2263 thanks to the addition of two new models, the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 SUVs.
