A new electric car price war is brewing.
In the past few months several new sharply priced mid-size electric SUVs have lobbed onto the Australian market.
All have a few things in common: they are all from new Chinese brands and all undercut the Tesla Model Y on price.
Geelyās EX5 is the latest example to land on our roads with prices starting from $43,490 (before on-road costs) for the base Complete grade and $47,490 for the fully-loaded Inspire variant.
These prices were leaked on car valuation site Redbook ahead of an official announcement from the brand.
This undercuts all of the newcomers, including the $45,888 Leapmotor C10, $53,900 Deepal S07 and the $54,800 Xpeng G6.
And well below the heavily discounted ā and soon to be replaced ā Model Y at $55,000. The updated Model Y range kicks off at $63,400.

Geely is also throwing three years of free servicing and one year of free charging on the Evie network.
The EX5 is fitted with a circa-60kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery (LFP) that delivers a driving range of up to 430km.
This is paired with a single electric motor that makes 160kW and 320Nm and drives the front wheels.
It can be charged at up to 100kW via a suitable fast charger and 11kW when connected to an AC wallbox charger.

The base Compete version has 18-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting and flush door handles.Ā
Inside there are synthetic leather wrapped seats that are power adjustable and heated in the front row. A large 15.4-inch multimedia screen is paired with a 10.2-inch digital instrument display.
The Inspire grade ups the ante with 19-inch alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof, power tailgate, front seat ventilation, 16-speaker premium stereo and a head-up display.
