Less than 20 laps have been completed in the past hour with two separate safety car periods for crashes to Michael Caruso and Paul Radisich.

Radisich's Commodore smashed into tyre wall head-on and rolled onto its side.

The Kiwi was trapped in the vehicle for over 20 minutes before being pulled out through the roof.

He is now being taken to hospital as a precaution but is not seriously injured.

Kelly leads the race at the halfway point from fellow Commodore drivers Greg Murphy and Steven Richards.

Craig Lowndes is the best of the Ford drivers in fourth.

With several safety car periods already race officials have set a time limit to the event with a 5.45pm AEST finish time, however it is expected the race will be completed well before then.
