Volkswagen has revealed yet another special edition, this time focusing on the Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace range.

The new special edition is dubbed the Monochrome, and adds to an increasingly expansive range of variants, alongside the uniquely-Australian Allspace Adventure, and Tiguan R Grid Edition.

The Monochrome is available in either standard five-seat or seven-seat Allspace Tiguan forms, with the price set at $53,390 before on-road costs for the five seater, or $55,690 for the Allspace.

This places the Monochrome editions below the R-Line in each line-up, which is intriguing given both ship with the R-Line’s beefy 162TSI 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol turbo engine (162kW/350Nm) and all-wheel-drive system.

Each version is also equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

As the name suggests, each Monochrome special edition will only be available in either white, black, grey, or silver, and also comes with a black style package, unique interior trims, and gloss-black 19-inch alloy wheels.

However, the Monochrome versions have a smaller 8.0-inch multimedia screen with fewer features than the 9.2-inch multimedia set-up which normally comes in the R-Line.

Also differentiating the Monochrome from the R-Line is the use of cloth trim instead of leather and manual seat adjustment instead of electric, while some features like heated seats, a heated steering wheel, premium LED tail-lights and a powered tailgate have also been removed to bring the price down.

The only options available on the Monochrome editions include the Oryx White pearlescent paint ($900) or a panoramic glass sunroof ($2100).

Volkswagen explains that the Monochrome editions, alongside the Grid Editions, are part of a plan to help it keep stock online in an environment where certain pieces of equipment are limited or come with long waiting lists.

ā€œThese editions are pre-emptive measures to keep supply online,ā€ explained Michal Szaniecki, director of passenger vehicles for Volkswagen Australia. ā€œThey help customers not only get into a Tiguan, but helps them with the future, because of the limited nature of these editions, it means they’re getting good value.ā€

VW Australia expected supply issues for items like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, stripped from the 2023 T-Roc range, to clear up within six months, but now says that timeline has extended.

The Monochrome special editions will join the Tiguan lineup in January next year, but will be able to be ordered in September.

Both the Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace have struggled this year on the sales charts, partly due to the lack of stock coming into the country.

To the end of July, Volkswagen has sold 1164 Tiguans and 1317 Tiguan Allspaces, which is 31.7 and 56.1 per cent down year-on-year respectively.
