2021 Skoda Superb pricing and specs revealed: Kia Stinger and Subaru Outback look out as racier Sportline returns, Scout crossover stays

Aimed at the Kia Stinger, the Skoda Superb Sportline AWD brings a racier look and more standard equipment for 2021.

Skoda has revealed pricing and specification information for the all-wheel-drive versions of its Superb large car range, with details of the front-wheel drive 162TSI models due sometime before April 2021 to help fill the void left by the departed Holden Commodore.

The biggest news is the return of the Sportline badge from $60,390 plus on-road costs after a year-plus long hiatus due to European pollution-testing related production hold-ups under the WLTP regime.

Aimed at the likes of the Kia Stinger, the Czech-built five-door liftback AWD now costs some $3100 more than before, due in part to what Skoda reckons is $3400 of extra equipment.

This includes Matrix headlights, Volkswagen’s ‘Virtual Cockpit’ electronic instrumentation, cordless Apple CarPlay functionality, a different audio system and wireless charging, among other minor equipment upgrades.

The final three items are said to help justify a $2500 price hike on the MY21 Superb Scout 4x4 from $61,990, which of course is Skoda’s take on the evergreen Subaru Outback in that it offers greater ground clearance and the inevitable plastic body cladding. Metallic and panoramic sunroof add $770 and $1900 to the bottom line respectively.

As before, the Sportline is powered by a 206kW/350Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, driving all four wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), and capable of hurtling the Skoda to 100km/h in just 5.8 seconds.

The Superb Scout, meanwhile, employs a slightly detuned version of the same engine and with a particulate filter to help reduce noxious emissions, with 200kW and 350Nm on tap, though it utilises a seven-speed DCT. Perhaps that’s why it can hit 100 from standstill 0.1s quicker than Sportline.

There seems to be no more diesels in the Superb mix for Australia.

Finally, Skoda says a service pack spanning five years for $1700 can be added to both models.

Sub-$70K Large car sales have been slashed by nearly 65 per cent in the first nine months of 2020, with the WLTP-limited Superb range falling 75.2 per cent over the same period, at just 184 units. The Stinger maintained its year-to-date volume at 1405 sales, while Commodore registrations plummeted 81.4 per cent to just 860.
