    Holden Rodeo: Knocking engine

    Just over a year ago the engine in my Holden Rodeo 3.5-litre V6 developed a loud knock. According to the Holden dealer one of the bearings had spun and the motor had to be replaced. In order to save money I bought a new replacement engine and installed it myself. Just before the 12-month warranty was up the engine began using excessive amounts of oil. I took it back to Holden and on testing it they also found it to be excessive, but denied me any assistance because I installed it myself. When I bought the new motor I was not told that the warranty was subject to Holden installing the engine. Is there any guideline in relation to the sale of car replacement parts that I could refer to?

    Everything has a statutory guarantee with it that covers the goods as sold. That you installed the engine yourself shouldn’t have any bearing on the guarantee, unless it can be shown that you have done something to cause the fault. In your case it would seem that is not the situation and the problem is with the engine as supplied by Holden.
