Good timing

THE last time my wife's 2003 1.6-litre VW Golf went in for a major service the dealer told me the timing belt needed to be replaced. The car had travelled only 40,000km and was five years old. The service book tells me the belt should be replaced every four years or 90,000km. Now the car has done about 55,000km and I have booked it in for a minor service and decided it is time to do the timing belt. When I asked the dealer about doing the timing belt, he told me the water pump should be done at the same time because they generally leak around that time. I was wondering if you had heard of this? I feel like the dealers are taking my wife for a ride.

CHANGE the belt. It should really have been changed at the earlier major service. It is being changed on the basis of time, not kilometres travelled, so do that, and do the water pump as the dealer suggests as they do leak.
