A pop-up message saying "gearbox error – reverse not available" recently appeared in my four-year-old VW Golf TSI with the 7-speed DSG gearbox. Even driving forward the car doesn't speed up. It was taken to the dealer, but it’s out of warranty. I feel it’s a VW mechanical fault that has caused this since I haven't done anything to the car. Would I be able to get warranty out of this issue, or what should I do?
It’s gone into “limp-home” mode because it’s detected a problem, but before you do anything else you need to find what caused the problem. Once you’ve done that you could approach VW and ask them to repair it at their expense, or pay part of the cost to repair it. If they won’t and you want to take it further you could go to the ACCC.
