Continually troublesome Golf

My 20-year-old daughter recently purchased a 2012 VW Golf TSI from a dealer in Melbourne. She has had nothing but problems with it, today will be the fourth time it's going back to the dealer (second time on the back of a tow truck) due to faults. The engine light has again come on and it is rattling very badly and emitting a loud ticking noise and cannot be driven. We appreciate the help the dealer has given us (they have organized the tow trucks and given her a loan car every time it's been back) but feel as though they are only band-aiding the problems. The three-month warranty runs out in two weeks and I'm worried that she will be stuck with a lemon. What are her rights after the warranty runs out? She is so disheartened and upset with her car that she already wants to get rid of it. It's hard for anyone to go through this let alone a young adult.

The dealer appears to be reasonable and seems to be trying to fix it, even though you have doubts about what he is doing. Because of the history the dealer can't reasonably walk away from his responsibility, so you're on pretty safe grounds. But given that the warranty is about to expire I would sit down and talk to the dealer about what he would be prepared to do on an on-going basis if the car continues to give trouble.
