BYD Atto 1

FROM $23,990

The BYD Atto 1 light hatchback arrived in Australia in late 2025. It serves as the entry point for the brand and currently holds the title of the most affordable electric vehicle in the local market. This model follows the success of the larger BYD Atto 3 and aims to attract urban buyers looking for a compact city car with modern battery technology.

Overseas markets know this vehicle by several different names. In China it is sold as the BYD Seagull while European and South African buyers see it badged as the BYD Dolphin Surf. Some Latin American regions refer to the car as the BYD Dolphin Mini. Despite the varied branding it remains a global platform focused on efficiency and ease of use in crowded traffic.

The 2026 BYD Atto 1 features the latest Blade Battery tech and sits on the e-Platform 3.0. Recent updates for the Australian market include two distinct battery sizes and a refined interior designed for local tastes. While the exterior remains largely consistent with the initial global release the software and safety systems continue to receive over-the-air updates to improve the driving experience.

BYD Atto 1 Accessories

The BYD Atto 1 includes synthetic leather seat trim, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, rear camera, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control as part of some Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) tech that also includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane-keep alert, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Vehicle to Load functionality that provides power for external appliances and 15-inch steel wheels with hubcaps.

The BYD Atto 1 Premium adds more equipment, like a surround-view monitor, powered and heated front seats, a reach as well as rake adjustable steering wheel, a wireless charger, LED headlights and 16-inch alloy wheels.

But there is a spare wheel, just a tyre repair kit.

BYD Atto 1 Interior

The BYD Atto 1’s square shape and high roof makes entry and egress easy, into a spacious and surprisingly practical four-seater city-car interior.

Key points include ample room for taller people up front, a good driving position, nice little steering wheel, heaps of storage including underneath the two-level centre console, and ample all-round vision.

The minimalist dash presentation is clean and logical, with electronic instrumentation ahead of the driver and a 10.1-inch central touchscreen in the centre.

As with many cars from China, it looks good, is well made, has a slick operation, clear markings and a row of fast-access icons for climate, audio, vehicle function, home screen and other controls.

But accessing some vehicle functions, including the fiddly climate control settings, requires digging deep into several menus, creating distraction and frustration. The vinyl seats are clammy. And there is a cheap off-gas plasticky smell permeating throughout the car.

Meanwhile, the Atto 1’s two-person-only rear seat area is also easy to access and reasonably roomy, the backrest and cushion are comfortable, door storage is generous, and while there are no USB ports, overhead lighting, centre armrest or cupholders, the centre console reaches back enough for there to be a cubby for one bottle or a mug.

The backrests are also split 50/50 to provide access to the cargo area.

BYD Atto 1 Engine

The BYD Atto 1 offers two electric motor options.

The Essential’s makes 65kW of power and 175Nm of torque, while the Premium’s outputs are 115kW and 220Nm, respectively.

Both drive the front wheels via a single-speed transmission.

BYD Atto 1 Dimensions

The dimensions of the BYD Atto 1 Hatchback vary according to year of manufacture and spec level.
The dimensions shown above are for the base model.

BYD Atto 1 Wheel Size

The BYD Atto 1 has a number of different wheel and tyre options. When it comes to tyres, these range from 175x65 R15 for Hatchback in 2026 with a wheel size that spans from 5x15 inches.

BYD Atto 1 Towing Capacity

The BYD Atto 1 has no towing capacity for the latest model available.

BYD Atto 1 Seats

The BYD Atto 1 is a four-seater city car with seating for two up front and two in the back row.

The front seats are of the tombstone ‘bucket’ variety, with manual adjustment on the base Essential but electric assistance (with heating elements) on the Premium.

The rear backrests are split 50/50 and fold to extend luggage capacity with the cushion fixed in place.

On both grades they are covered with synthetic leather material.

BYD Atto 1 Fuel consumption

The BYD Atto 1 is available in a number of variants and body types that are powered by Electric fuel type(s)
*Combined fuel consumption

BYD Atto 1 Boot Space

The BYD Atto 1’s boot area offers a useful 308 litres of cargo capacity with backrests up, and 1037L with them folded down.

The deep floor hides an area that’s large enough for charger cables, laptops and other items that need to be kept out of sight. Which is useful as there is no luggage cover.

Nor is there a spare wheel, just a tyre-repair kit, which is always unsatisfactory.

Note, too, that, unlike some other EVs, the Atto 1 does not have storage underneath the bonnet.

BYD Atto 1 Speed

The BYD Atto 1 Essential can accelerate from standstill to 100km/h (0-100km/h) in 11.1 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 135km/h.

The BYD Atto 1 Premium, with more power, can accelerate from standstill to 100km/h (0-100km/h) in 9.1 seconds, but also offers a maximum speed of 135km/h.

BYD Atto 1 Range

The official consumption average for the Essential is 15.5kWh/100km and its 30kWh 'Blade' battery offers a WLTP range of 220km.

The 43.2kW Premium bumps average energy use up to 16kWh/100km and brings 310km of WLTP range to the table.
