The Porsche 912 was launched in 1965 as a more affordable entry point into the brand. It used the body of the Porsche 911 but carried a four-cylinder engine closely related to the one in the outgoing 356. Positioned below the six-cylinder models, the Porsche 912 balanced performance with lower running costs, making it popular in Europe and the United States.
Production of the first Porsche 912 ended in 1969 when the new 914 took its place as the brand’s entry model. However, the car returned briefly in 1976 as the Porsche 912E for the North American market. Built for just one year, it used a Volkswagen-sourced 2.0-litre engine and filled the gap between the discontinued 914 and the new 924 coupe.
Today the Porsche 912 holds a niche place in the brand’s history. Collectors value it as a lighter and more accessible alternative to early 911s, while enthusiasts see it as a bridge between the classic 356 and the modern 911 line-up.
The line-up currently starts at $15,730 for the 912 (base) and ranges through to $22,990 for the range-topping 912 Targa.
