The Mazda MX-6 is the sports car time forgot

Mazda is no stranger to making sports cars, with its most famous examples being the MX-5 and RX-7 - but the brand also created a handful of coupes that have been largely forgotten, such as the MX-6.
Recently Mazda trademarked the ‘MX-6’ nameplate, which has people wondering if the company is planning to revive its front-wheel drive sports coupe.
First introduced in 1987, the MX-6 was simply a two-door version of the 626, sharing the same running gear and styling as the sedate sedan.
Power came from a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo, which produced a mere 100kW of power, but 233Nm of torque.
In 1989, four-wheel steering (4WS) was added to improve cornering at low and high speeds.
The second generation arrived in 1991 and was still identical to the 626 under the skin, but outside the coupe received more unique styling.
The turbocharged engine was also ditched for a 2.5-litre V6, which was good for 121kW/213Nm.
Connected to the V6 was either a five-speed manual or four-speed auto, while the MX-6 was again offered with 2WS or 4WS.
The MX-6 lasted for 10 years before being discontinued in ’97 alongside its sister car, the Ford Probe.
If the assumptions are true, a new version could be based on the Mazda 6Â and use a turbo 2.5-litre, which might be enough for enthusiasts to forgive Mazda for not creating another MPS model.
