Owning a Lamborghini Aventador is a dream that only a handful of people can achieve, but a father-son team are creating one in their own backyard.

Using 3D printing to create the body panels, interior, head- and tail-lights the project costs $29,000 (USD$20,000) and has taken a year-and-a-half to make.

The rest of the car is made from a mixture of parts bought off eBay, Wilwood brakes, Holley Dominator ECU and even Lamborghini.

Underneath the skin you won’t find a 6.5-litre V12 engine, instead the powerplant is an LS1 from a 2003 Corvette, while the transaxle is from a Porsche 911. Talk about mix and match.

While there are people who will probably write this project off, you have to admit this creation looks almost identical to an actual Aventador, just look at those tail-lights.

This is one of the most impressive backyard builds we’ve ever seen and it's a bargain considering the real thing costs $789,809.

Would you 3D-print a car? Let us know in the comments.

Following a passion shared by his father and grandfather, Mitchell’s love of cars really kicked off with his Godfather’s purchase of a new Mazda RX-8. Exposure to that car changed his world forever, leading to an RX-7 obsession. To feed his automotive addiction, Mitchell decided to become a motoring journalist and made his mark at several high-profile motoring publications before landing at CarsGuide. While he is a rotary loyalist, Mitchell also has a massive love for Aussie muscle cars, and dreams of one day getting behind the wheel of a Charger R/T E49 (if anyone will let him). His other passions include Queensland, and spending Saturdays with the boys.
