The Omoda 9 is the Chinese brand’s flagship SUV, launched in Australia in 2025. It’s positioned as a premium offering above the Omoda 5, with more space, features and power. Built by Chery, the Omoda 9 will compete with larger mid-size SUVs from more established players like Mazda and Hyundai.
In China, it's sold under Chery's Jaecoo brand as the Jaecoo 9. Styling is sharp and modern, with a tech-heavy cabin. Early previews show digital displays, soft-touch materials and a clean layout aimed at younger buyers.
Omoda is still a new name in Australia, but Chery is pushing hard to grow its local presence. The Omoda 9 could attract families looking for value in a large SUV.
The Omoda 9 is available in four colours - 'Silk White', 'Dove Grey', 'Shadow Grey' and 'Ink Black'.
The Omoda 9 Virtue SHS comes well-equipped with a long list of standard features. These include 20-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and tail-lights, dual-zone climate control, a 14-speaker Sony-branded sound system, inbuilt navigation, surround view camera, automatic parking function, head-up display, wireless smartphone charger, leather seats with memory function, heated seats and steering wheel.
The Omoda 9 has a more upmarket interior design, look and feel compared to what Chery offers in Australia. It has a pair of 12.3-inch screens for the instruments and infotainment system housed in a single element, as well as leather-trimmed seats and plenty of small item storage spaces.
There's also an in-built fragrance system that can diffuse three different scents into the cabin - Natural, Cure and Sport.
The Omoda 9 is powered by the brand's Super Hybrid System which combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with three electric motors to create a potent SUV with 395kW of power.
This complex system can send power to either the front wheels or all four wheels via a three-speed ‘Dedicated Hybrid Transmission’.
The Omoda 9 is a five-seat mid-size SUV. It has a conventional layout and good cabin space, but the front seats lack height adjustment for taller drivers to get lower and more comfortable.
The boot of the Omoda 9 measures a roomy 660 litres and offers a flat floor with a square load area, but there is no spare wheel - only a tyre repair kit.
The Omoda 9 has a claimed 0-100km/h time of just 4.9 seconds, which is very quick for an SUV of this size and with such a small petrol engine.
Fuel economy is officially rated at 1.4L/100km, although that relies on using the battery to its maximum and once that is depleted, you can expect to see a much higher figure.
Omoda claims the 34kWh battery provides up to 145km of EV only range, which is more than its direct rivals can manage.
Omoda claims that the 9 SHS can drive up to 1100km, but that is theoretical and based on achieving both the full EV only range and then the 1.4L/100km figure.
