It sounds like a problem with the turbo or the fuel pump. Get it to a diesel mechanic and have it checked.
I wouldn't recommend buying an old Patrol with the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, such as the one you are looking at. It's right in the zone of death when it comes to the turbo-diesel engine, and it will have done a million miles.
It gets harder to mount a case for a car that is as old as your is, but if you take a reasonable approach and are willing to compromise, as you seem to be by accepting the labour costs, I think you should pursue it. It is clearly a problem and the company has the responsibility for its products no matter their age.
The old Patrol hand grenade strikes again. There were fundamental flaws with that engine, it's one to avoid. But with yours now eight years old you're going to have trouble convincing Nissan to come to the party with the cost of repairs. It could be a stray current, or it could be that the concentration of glycol in the coolant is too low. There should be 30 percent glycol; if it’s too low the radiator can corrode. More likely it’s a stray current, probably caused by a bad earth on an accessory that’s been fitted to the vehicle, or it could be a bad earth the engine and the body.
I WOULD like to be able to confirm that the problem with the 3-litre turbodiesel engine has been fixed, but I can't. My attempts to get Nissan to own up to a fix have been a dismal failure. All it would tell me is it would take care of owners of any Patrol that had an engine problem. Read into that what you will.
I HAVEN'T heard of rust spots as you report, but maybe our readers can help. Certainly you need to have the paint repaired and Nissan seems to be willing to come to the party.
