Australia's best new cars are now one step closer to being announced, with judges finalising the Top 10 models for each 2019 CarsGuide Car of the Year award.

BMW has unveiled its X5 Protection VR6, a bulletproof and explosive-resistant version of its large luxury SUV aimed at high-end dignitaries and very important people.

BMW Australia has reshuffled pricing and specification for its updated X1, dropping pricing for the two base petrol versions, while also lifting its flagship xDrive25i by $2000 to $62,900 before on-road costs.Still kicking the range off is the sDrive18i, which has dropped $1400 to $44,500, while second-to-top xDrive20i is now $2400 cheaper than before at $48,500.Pricing for the single diesel-powered offering, the sDrive18d, remains unchanged at $49,900.From the outside, the facelifted X1 can be determined by the new one-piece kidney grille and hexagonal-shaped LED headlights, while at the rear, larger exhaust outlets and LED tail-lights can be glimpsed.Inside, buyers are treated to a wireless smartphone charger, anti-dazzle rearvew mirror and 8.8-inch touchscreen multimedia system with satellite navigation and Apple CarPlay connectivity.Other standard equipment in the sDrive18i and sDrive18d also includes 18-inch wheels, ‘Sensatec’ upholstery, leather-trimmed sports steering wheel, reversing camera and an ‘xLine’ exterior styling pack.Stepping up to the sDrive20i adds a ‘Navigation System Plus’ 10.25-inch touchscreen multimedia system, head-up display, power-operated tailgate and ‘X1’ puddle lamps.The top-tier xDrive25i gains leather interior, 19-inch wheels, heated front seats, keyless entry, rear seat adjustment, two-zone air conditioning and an M sports steering wheel.Powering the sDrive18i is a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine producing 103kW/220Nm.The sDrive18d kicks things up to 110kW/330Nm from its 2.0-litre turbo-diesel, while the sDrive20i and xDrive25i are propelled by force-fed petrol engines with the same displacement outputting 141kW/280Nm and 170kW/350Nm respectively.All versions of the X1 send drive to the front wheels, barring the top-spec xDrive25i that sports an all-wheel-drive configuration.The base sDrive18i and sDrive20i are equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the sDrive18d and xDrive25i are fitted with an eight-speed torque-converter automatic.

BMW has revealed a facelifted version of its X1 small SUV, due to go on sale in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2019. Following on from the recent launch of the new-generation 1 Series small car, the updated X1 is packed with subtle styling changes, new tech including a plug-in hybrid variant, and a lightly revised interior.The grille now resembles other recent BMW arrivals with a newly-joined centre, as well as revised headlights and L-shaped tail-lights that align more closely with the larger X3 and X5 SUVs. The front and rear bumpers have also been updated for a more modern look.Inside, the new X1 is all about subtle refinements - there’s a larger central multimedia screen in either 8.8- or 10.25-inch sizes, though it still uses the brand’s older iDrive 6 system, rather than the more recent OS 7.0. There are also new materials, as well as refreshed interior colour schemes and a colour head-up display will be available optionally. It’s not yet known if BMW has upgraded the X1’s active safety credentials, which currently lack features such as full AEB (forward or reverse), blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning and rear cross traffic alert. The brand has also launched the xDrive25e plug-in hybrid variant of the X1, which uses the same 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine and electric motor as the Mini Countryman PHEV. It’s capable of driving around 50km on electric-only power using a 9.7kWh lithium-ion battery pack.The X1’s drivetrains are otherwise unchanged, with the same sDrive18d, sDrive18d, sDrive20i and xDrive25i models retained.BMW Australia is yet to comment on the xDrive25e’s local sales prospects, but considering how many other plug-in hybrids BMW offers locally, the X1 PHEV stands a solid chance. European X1 buyers are also offered low-end sDrive16d and high-end xDrive25d variants. BMW Australia has confirmed the facelifted X1 will go on sale locally in the fourth quarter of 2019, with pricing and specs to be announced before then.
