The final production model will be unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, two years after the concept car was first presented and will go on sale in 2010.

Peugeot Automobiles Australia spokesman Matthew McAuley said: “I think it would do very well here and hopefully we would also get it by 2010.”

The 2+2 coupe will feature a lightweight body with more aerodynamics, more power, lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon emissions.

It is the same 4.2m length as the 308 hatchback, but 25mm wider with a lower roofline. Up front are four cylindrical lights and out back are two centrally mounted exhaust pipes.

The rear window is made of polycarbonate instead of glass, to generate an aerodynamic shape.

Inside, the RCZ concept car is similar to the 308, but with leather fascia, plenty of chrome, aluminium and black lacquered fittings, and a Bell & Ross clock in the centre.

It will be powered by the 1.6 litre twin-scroll turbo engine developed jointly with Citroen and BMW Group. In the 207 GTi, it has a power output of 128kW, but with new engine management software it produces 160kW and 280Nm of torque with 300Nm in overboost.

It is mated to a new six-speed manual gearbox.

Peugeot claims a maximum speed of 235km/h, 0-100km/h time of seven seconds, fuel consumption of 6.7 litres per 100 km in the combined cycle, and 160g/km of carbon emissions.

Braking relies on large 360mm diameter ventilated discs at the front with four piston calipers and it sits on polished split-rim 19-inch alloy wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 245/40 R19 tyres.
