The MG MG7 name first appeared in 2007, when SAIC Motor revived it for a large sedan sold in China. That car was based on the Rover 75 platform following MG’s collapse and takeover by SAIC. It was positioned as a more premium offering than other MG models at the time and remained on sale until the early 2010s before being discontinued.
The MG MG7 returned in 2022 as a completely new mid-size sedan built on SAIC’s latest architecture. This second-generation model shifted focus to sporty design and turbocharged petrol power. Engine options in China have included 1.5-litre and 2.- litre turbo units paired with dual-clutch automatic transmissions.
In some markets the 2022 MG MG7 has been linked to the Roewe brand under SAIC’s broader portfolio, though it retains MG badging in export plans. Its rebirth reflects MG’s push upmarket as it expands beyond SUVs and electric cars into more traditional passenger segments.
The line-up currently starts at $44,990 for the Mg7 Essence and ranges through to $44,990 for the range-topping Mg7 Essence.
