The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG launched in 2010 as a modern tribute to the iconic 300SL Gullwing. Developed entirely by AMG, it was the first car from Mercedes’ performance arm built from the ground up. It featured dramatic gullwing doors, a long bonnet and a naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 that sent power to the rear wheels through a dual-clutch gearbox.
Available as a coupe and later a roadster, the SLS was praised for its brutal performance and everyday usability. Its aluminium spaceframe kept weight down, and the engine sat behind the front axle for better balance. Australia received several versions including the SLS Black Series, which pushed outputs further and came with revised suspension and aero.
Production ended in 2014, replaced by the smaller AMG GT. While short-lived, the SLS made a strong impact. It remains a collector’s favourite thanks to its design, sound and status as the last naturally aspirated AMG flagship.
