Honda Clarity

The Honda Clarity was first launched in 2008 as the FCX Clarity, a hydrogen fuel cell sedan offered in limited numbers. It was positioned as a proof of concept for Honda’s zero-emissions technology, leased to customers in select markets including the United States and Japan. While not sold in Australia, it highlighted Honda’s commitment to alternative powertrains well before mainstream electrification took off.

In 2016 Honda introduced a broader Clarity range. The second-generation Honda Clarity was available as a fuel cell vehicle, a plug-in hybrid and a battery electric model, depending on market demand. This move gave buyers more flexibility, but the battery electric version offered a short driving range and was phased out quickly. The plug-in hybrid variant became the most widely adopted model in the lineup.

By 2021 the Honda Clarity was discontinued worldwide as Honda shifted resources to newer electrification projects. Despite its short lifespan, the Clarity remains notable as Honda’s most ambitious attempt to commercialise hydrogen and plug-in hybrid technology before its current electric vehicle push.
