The Kia Sorento is a large seven-seat SUV and the SLi sits high in the range, with a list price of $46,990 for the petrol version and $50,490 for the diesel variant.

Standard features include the leather seats, an eight-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10-speaker Harman Kardon stereo with digital radio, plus there’s sat nav, a reversing camera, dual-zone climate control, proximity unlocking, an auto tailgate, powered front seats, tinted rear glass, alloy pedals, LED taillights, auto headlights with LED DRLs, roof rails, a rear spoiler, faux-wood trim on the centre console and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The previous 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine has now been replaced by 3.5-litre V6 producing a healthy 206kW and 336Nm, while the 2.2-litre diesel makes 147kW and 441Nm. The six-speed automatic transmission in the old car has now been replaced by an eight-speed auto.

Petrol Sorentos are front-wheel drive and diesel Sorentos are all-wheel drives.

Despite the petrol V6 being bigger in this new model, fuel usage has only increased by 0.1L/100km for 10.0L/100km under combined driving conditions. The diesel is more frugal, with Kia saying you should see 7.6L/100km.

Scoring a maximum five-star ANCAP rating, advanced safety kit includes AEB, lane keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control.

Three top tether mounts and two ISOFIX points can be found in the second row only.

Laura Berry is a best-selling Australian author and journalist who has been reviewing cars for almost 20 years.  Much more of a Hot Wheels girl than a Matchbox one, she grew up in a family that would spend every Friday night sitting on a hill at the Speedway watching Sprintcars slide in the mud. The best part of this was being given money to buy stickers. She loved stickers… which then turned into a love of tattoos. Out of boredom, she learnt to drive at 14 on her parents’ bush property in what can only be described as a heavily modified Toyota LandCruiser.   At the age of 17 she was told she couldn’t have a V8 Holden ute by her mother, which led to Laura and her father laying in the driveway for three months building a six-cylinder ute with more horsepower than a V8.   Since then she’s only ever owned V8s, with a Ford Falcon XW and a Holden Monaro CV8 part of her collection over the years.  Laura has authored two books and worked as a journalist writing about science, cars, music, TV, cars, art, food, cars, finance, architecture, theatre, cars, film and cars. But, mainly cars.   A wife and parent, her current daily driver is a chopped 1951 Ford Tudor with a V8.
