Tesla launches red hot new variant

Tesla has confirmed the pricing and specifications for the updated Model Y Performance in Australia ahead of deliveries commencing in late 2025.

It starts from $89,400 before on-road costs, which is $6500 more than it was in pre-update guise. Critically the Model Y Performance is still under the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold, meaning it’s eligible for Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption for novated lease buyers.

As a result, the updated Model Y Performance incurs a 5 per cent import tariff, whereas the rest of the electric SUV line-up doesn’t as Australia has a Free Trade Agreement with China.

2026 Tesla Model Y engine/powertrain and efficiency

The Model Y RWD is powered by a single, rear-mounted electric motor with an undisclosed system output, but it’s claimed to do the 0-100km/h sprint in 5.9 seconds. This is fed by a 60kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with a WLTP claimed range of 466km.

The Model Y Long Range AWD features a dual-motor, all-wheel drive set-up with an undisclosed total system output, but a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.8 seconds. This is fed by a 79kWh lithium-ion battery with a WLTP claimed range of 600km.

The Model Y Performance AWD also features a dual-motor all-wheel drive set-up, but it has a total system output of 343kW. The 0-100km/h sprint time is 3.5 seconds.

2026 Tesla Model Y safety

The pre-update Tesla Model Y received a five-star ANCAP safety rating back in 2022, but this hasn’t been extended to the current model yet.

Standard safety equipment includes seven airbags, auto emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning and assist, adaptive cruise control, as well as a surround-view camera system.

2026 Tesla Model Y warranty and servicing

The Tesla Model Y is covered by a four-year, 80,000km warranty. The high-voltage battery, on the other hand, is covered by an eight-year, 192,000km warranty.

Tesla doesn’t enforce any scheduled servicing for the Model Y.

The Tesla Model Y RWD and Long Range AWD measure in at 4792mm long, 1982mm wide and 1624mm tall with a 2890mm wheelbase.

The Model Y Performance, on the other hand, is slightly lower at 1611mm.
