A rough-and-tumble 4WD is due a massive upgrade.

GWM's updated Tank 300 off-roader has been revealed in China with a bigger battery and more power.

Its plug-in hybrid set up consists of a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 188kW and 380Nm, and a front-mounted electric motor.

The electric motor has been upgraded significantly and now produces 130kW, up from 120kW and torque is pumped up 95Nm to 495Nm.

The other upgrade for the car is an improved 36.7kWh lithium-ion battery, with an electric-only range of 105km (WLTC).

There also has been an increase in charging speeds, as DC fast charging from 30-80 per cent takes about 16 minutes, down from roughly 24 minutes.

On the inside, there is a 14.6-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital driver display, along with dual 50W wireless charging in the cabin.

Australia is yet to see the PHEV version of the Tank 300, with its current lineup made up of petrol, diesel and plugless hybrid.

The Tank 300 has been a strong seller in the large SUV under $80,000 segment, approaching 5000 sales for 2025, but it has not been confirmed whether the PHEV version will join the range.

It is likely the Tank 300 PHEV will follow the same path to Australia as GWM’s larger Tank 500 that recently joined as a PHEV down under.

The Tank 500 PHEV starts from $79,990, drive-away and sits at the top of the Tank range, $4000 more than the hi-spec plugless hybrid.

Based on the Tank 500 PHEV pricing, it is expected that the Tank 300 PHEV will exceed $60,000 if it arrives in Australia.

GWM Australia have been contacted for comment as to whether the Tank 300 PHEV will make its way to Aussie shores.
