These two books are just the sort of thing parents should give to their youngsters — before they hit the road.

The first has the potential to make a real difference to road safety and the other is the story of a bloke who made a huge difference in his life.

Blood, Sweat and Gears is the second book written by Jennie Hill and Geoff Fickling to pass on life-saving driving tips. It's a great read, light and easy with plenty of illustrations and quick tips, and aimed at the youngsters who are in the highest risk group among Australian drivers.

The subtitle on the front cover — A boring book about safe driving ... NOT! — tells you exactly who they want to help.

The couple has done a terrific job on the book and it is just the sort of thing parents should give to their youngsters — before they hit the road. Coupled with a decent save driving course, it is a great way to arm them for their life in motoring.

The other book, which records the life of Tony Gaze, is all about a life in motoring. And aircraft.

Gaze is a larger-than-life figure who, even today at the age of 89, is an impressive gentleman with steely eyes and a fierce determination.

He is a World War II fighter ace who flew Spitfires in Britain, then came back to Australia and raced at the top level for many years. The story of his life is a cracking read.

Stewart Wilson has also done a top job on 'Almost Unknown', bringing Gaze to life and putting into print a story which needs to be preserved for future generations.

The best way to get a copy of 'Blood, sweat and gears' is through www.motorvate.net.au while 'Almost Famous', which is priced at $59.95, is available through www.chevron.com.au
