Exactly one week after Mazda showed us the first images of the upcoming 2014 Mazda 3 hatch, the sedan version has now been revealed courtesy of the Russian Top Gear website.

Much like the hatch version, the new 3 sedan slips straight into Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ design language, looking for all the world like a 2/3 scale version of its larger 6 sibling. Like the 6, the 3 sedan features a swooping roofline that ends at a short bootlid, disguising the sedan’s longer rear overhang.

Based on the images, the sedan looks to ride on the same 60mm longer wheelbase of the new hatch, unlike the 6 which uses different wheelbases between its sedan and wagon bodies. This would suggest a larger boot for the 3 sedan, while the interior design appears to match the new hatch.

Mechanical details are yet to be confirmed, but the sedan is expected to use the hatch’s 2.0 litre and 2.5 lite Skyactiv G petrol engines at launch, with a 2.2 litre Skyactive D turbodiesel variant likely to follow later.

Mazda Australia has confirmed with Carsguide that the Mazda3 sedan will arrive in Australia with the hatch in the first quarter of 2014, and the company plans to release official images in the coming weeks.

Back when all cars burned fuel and couldn't drive themselves, Mal was curing boredom by scanning every car his parents' VB Commodore drove past. His childhood appreciation for the car world exploded during a three-year stint in the US, and serious questions were asked when he spent a good chunk of his uni career perfecting lap times at Wakefield Park. Mal got his big break scooping the VE II Commodore, before a stint at Overlander magazine and kicking off his online career with The Motor Report in its heyday. These days he's exactly the same height as Michael Schumacher and uses his powers for good at the helm of CarsGuide's editorial team. Mal proudly shuns brand allegiance and counts three young kids, an EH Holden, NA MX-5, KE20 Corolla, W116 Mercedes-Benz and the world's most versatile Toyota Echo among his personal stable. He also craves a Subaru Vortex, so get in touch if you know where to find one.
