Chery has revealed details of its first electric car, the Omoda E5.
The Omoda E5 is a compact SUV and will compete with the MG ZS EV, BYD Atto 3 and Hyundai Kona Electric. Chery will reveal the E5’s price before it lands in showrooms next month, but expect it to be competitively priced in the low-$40,000 range.
It shares much of its overall styling with the petrol-powered Omoda 5 but ditches the gaudy grille of the petrol version for a mostly closed front end that houses the charging port.
There are slim dynamic LED lights and aerodynamic alloy wheels and sloping coupe-like roof.
Chery is launching the Omoda E5 with two grades: the base BX and the fully-loaded EX.
Both are powered by a single electric motor, which sends 150kW and 340Nm to the front wheels.

A 61kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery provides a driving range of up to 430km nad can accept a maximum charge rate of 80kW. Chery claims this can replenish the battery from 30 to 80 per cent in half an hour when connected to a DC fast charger.
There is a fair level of standard kit, too.
The base BX comes with cloth seats with synthetic leather highlights, wireless device charger, six-speaker Sony stereo, 18-inch alloy wheels, 18 driver aids and two 12.3-inch digital displays with one for the multimedia and the other for the driver’s instruments.

It also comes with a full size spare, which no other electric car on the market does.
The EX builds on this with synthetic leather wrapped seats, heated front and rear window seats, ambient interior lighting, sunroof, power tailgate, two extra speakers for the stereo and a bird’s-eye view camera.
The Omoda E5 is covered by Chery’s seven year/unlimited km warranty, seven years roadside assistance and a seven year capped price servicing program.

Chery is one of the latest Chinese car brands to emerge in Australia. The maker launched less than two years ago and has been steadily building its line-up Down Under.
The Omoda E5 joins the petrol-powered Omoda 5 compact SUV, Tiggo 7 Pro mid-size SUV and Tiggo 8 Pro Max seven-seat SUV.
Chery launched with high aspirations, initially targeting 10,000 sales of the Omoda 5 in its first year. It hasn’t been able to move that many Omoda 5s, but it has established a firm foothold in Australia and is on track to move about 10,000 cars this year across its expanded line-up
