Suzuki has revealed a new SUV for the Indian market that offers a range of hybrid powertrains and some Toyota DNA.

The Maruti Suzuki Victoris is a small two-row SUV that sits alongside the related and similarly sized Grand Vitara in the Indian market.

The Victoris will be sold at Maruti Suzuki Arena dealers, while the Grand Vitara is sold at the carmaker’s Nexa dealers. The latter stands for New Exclusive Automotive Experience and focuses on more premium Suzuki vehicles.

The Victoris is being offered a wide range of powertrains and they all offer some form of hybridisation.

There’s a 1.5-litre four-cylinder 12V mild-hybrid that produces 76kW and 139Nm. It’s mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic with drive sent to the front wheels or through an all-wheel drive system.

This mild-hybrid engine is the same as what powers the Australian-specification Swift Hybrid and newly introduced Fronx Hybrid.

A 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol and compressed natural gas (CNG) engine that produces 74kW/137Nm on the former fuel source and 65kW/122Nm on the latter is also available exclusively with a five-speed manual and front wheel drive.

Lastly a Toyota-sourced 1.5-litre three-cylinder hybrid engine is available. The petrol engine produces 68kW and 122Nm, while the electric motor produces 59kW and 141Nm. No total system output is provided but power is sent through an electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT) to the front wheels only.

It’s worth noting this is the same three-cylinder hybrid engine that powers the likes of the Toyota Yaris and Yaris Cross, as well as the Indian-market Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which is a rebadged Suzuki Grand Vitara.

Claimed fuel consumption depends on the powertrain but varies between 3.5L/100km and 5.2L/100km.

The Victoris measures in at 4360mm long, 1795mm wide and 1655mm tall with a 2600mm wheelbase. This is ever so slightly smaller than a Corolla Cross.

Externally there’s LED projector headlights with LED daytime running lights, as well as a full-width rear LED lightbar for the tail-lights. Available features include a hands-free power tailgate and a panoramic glass sunroof.

Inside there’s a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 10.1-inch touchscreen multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa integration and over-the-air software updates, as well as an eight-speaker Infinity by Harman sound system, interior ambient lighting, climate control, ventilated front seats and eight-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat.

Safety equipment includes six airbags, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, as well as a surround-view camera.

Although Suzuki does sell some Indian-built vehicles, including the Jimny XL and Fronx, it’s unclear whether the Victoris will ever come to Australia.

“At this stage, the vehicle hasn’t been offered for Australian production orders,” said a Suzuki Australia spokesperson.

The Japanese carmaker will introduce the Vitara Hybrid and the e Vitara SUVs in the first quarter of 2026. The latter will be the brand’s first electric vehicle (EV) in Australia.
