Hyundai’s Kona N broke new ground as a hot hatch in the body of a compact SUV, but competition is coming in August with the new Volkswagen T-Roc R confirmed for local showrooms.

Part of an expanding line-up of R models - joining the just launched Tiguan R and Golf R - the new T-Roc R is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine making 221kW/400Nm. It’s paired exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and Volkswagen claims it will run 0-100km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

It will be priced from $59,300 before on-road costs, positioning the T-Roc R above the Kona N, which begins at $47,500 for the standard model and $50,500 for the Premium trim line.

That also positions it between the VW Golf GTI, which is priced from $54,490, and the Golf R, which starts at $68,990.

Michal Szaniecki, brand director of Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles said the T-Roc R has been positioned as the new entry-point to the R line-up.

“From under $60,000 the T-Roc R is both the perfect entry to the sought-after R family while driving like an ultra-hot hatchback cloaked as a crossover,” he said. “Its Volkswagen R genes run deep and lead the segment.”

In keeping with its recent trend, Volkswagen Australia has opted for a single, highly-equipped model. Standard equipment on the T-Roc R includes 19-inch alloy wheels, adaptive chassis control with race mode, exterior ambient lighting, keyless entry, digital instrument panel, wireless smartphone charging, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats and Nappa leather upholstery.

There will be an optional sunroof ($2000), Black Style Package ($1200), Beats audio system ($750) and Lapiz Blue matte inlays ($250).

Steve has been obsessed with all things automotive for as long as he can remember. Literally, his earliest memory is of a car. Having amassed an enviable Hot Wheels and Matchbox collection as a kid he moved into the world of real cars with an Alfa Romeo Alfasud. Despite that questionable history he carved a successful career for himself, firstly covering motorsport for Auto Action magazine before eventually moving into the automotive publishing world with CarsGuide in 2008. Since then he's worked for every major outlet, having work published in The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Drive.com.au, Street Machine, V8X and F1 Racing. These days he still loves cars as much as he did as a kid and has an Alfa Romeo Alfasud in the garage (but not the same one as before... that's a long story).
