True to its promise, MG Australia has detailed a price jump for the HS mid-size SUV, with impacted MY22 stock set to enter showrooms from April.

On February 1, MG Australia gave existing MY21 examples of the flagship Plus EV Essence variant a $1000 price rise, while all other versions carried on as is.

But two months from now, the entire HS range will shift $1000 upwards, all the way from entry-level Core, to $30,990 drive-away, to the twice-affected Plus EV Essence, at $49,990 (see full pricing table below).

Earlier this month, an MG Australia spokesperson said the price changes were made “in the face of unprecedented cost increases in raw materials and transport logistics in 2021”.

As a result, no adjustments have been made to the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander, Hyundai Tucson and Nissan X-Trail rival’s standard equipment.

For reference, entry-level Core and Vibe, mid-range Excite and flagship Essence are motivated by a 119kW/250Nm 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, which sends drive to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The mid-range Excite X and Essence X instead use a 168kW/360Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder petrol engine, which is mated to a six-speed DCT and an all-wheel-drive system.

Meanwhile, the flagship Plus EV Essence has a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, which pairs the 1.5-litre unit with a front-mounted electric motor for a combined 209kW/580Nm.

The Plus EV Essence also has a 10-speed torque-converter automatic transmission and a 16.6kWh lithium-ion battery that provides a claimed 52km of driving range.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
