Toyota has released new GR parts for its Camry, adding some sporty styling to its sedate sedan that could come to Australia in the form of a GR Sport variant.

Speaking to CarsGuide, a Toyota Australia spokesperson didn’t shut down the possibility of a style-focused GR Sport version of the Camry like the brand has done with the C-HR crossover.

“A GR Sport version of the Camry is not something we would rule out for future introduction, but is not something we have plans to introduce to the Australian market at this stage,” he said.

As a reminder, a GR Sport variant adds aggressive styling and subtle suspension tweaks rather than focussing on performance upgrades as seen on GR grades such as the Yaris and Supra.

Toyota Australia recently launched its GR Yaris to much fanfare, and also rolled out its Gazoo Racing Club to owners of the go-fast hatchback and Supra in a bid to build more groundswell for the burgeoning performance brand.

You’re unlikely to see something like a Camry GR Sport belting around a racetrack though, with the GR parts catalogue favouring style over substance.

The front is reworked with a new grille insert coloured in ‘Gunmetallic’ grey, while a shin-splitting front splitter means the Camry loses 24mm of ground clearance.

Chunky side skirts are also available, while a large bootlid spoiler and rear bumper insert are added to finish off the look.

Finally, a dress-up stainless-steel muffler is offered with quad 76mm outlets.

Matching the more aggressive bodywork are 19-inch wheels that are finished in black.

The one functional add-on is a GR Performance Damper, which is designed to eliminate “the vibration and noise while driving” to increase “both comfort during ride and steering stability during high-speed driving at a high level”, according to Toyota.

The final two GR parts available on the Camry are door handle protectors and a carbon-look numberplate frame.

Toyota’s updated eighth-generation Camry is due to hit Australian showrooms in the first half of 2021, complete with more technology and safety equipment.

Engines have yet to be locked in, but the current car is offered with a 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid, a 2.5-litre petrol and a 3.5-litre petrol V6, though the latter is rumoured to be dropped in the update due to slowing sales.
