Watch the Australian-engineered and designed new Ford Everest SUV get put through its paces during development in the Simpson Desert.

The new Ford Everest SUV was designed and engineered in Australia for Australian conditions.

With that in mind, Ford decided to test prototypes in the most realistic way possible, by spending a few days in the Simpson Desert simulating a recreational 4WD in the Australian outback.

The main aim of the testing was to ensure the Everest's 4WD and terrain management systems were up to the task of navigating the desert's sandy conditions.

The test also gives us our first look at the Everest SUV's coil-spring Watt's linkage rear suspension in action.

Matthew is a videographer at Carsguide, although he is known to occasionally commit words to the page as well. He spends a lot of his free time watching motorsport, which was great until his partner pointed out that perhaps he should also be spending time with their young daughter. Matt used to spend his days designing housing estates in a job he describes as "playing Sim City, but for real". However, after doing that for too many years, he became bored and decided a communications degree was something he should do (because journalists are successful and rich). Since starting at Carsguide he hasn't looked back. You can follow Matt on Twitter, if you dare.
